The beloved actress just said goodbye to the man who shaped her, and the words she chose to honor him are as raw and honest as anything she's ever put on screen.

Gabrielle Union announced on April 4, 2026, that her father, Sylvester "Cully" Union Jr., had passed away the morning before. She shared the news on Instagram alongside a video of him and a caption where she revealed his difficult diagnosis, quickly drawing over 7,000 comments.

A Man the World Seemed to Love

In her tribute, Gabrielle painted a picture of a man who moved through life as if he owned every room, yet never made anyone feel left out. She described him as someone who "never met a stranger, just friends he hadn't met yet."

A lifelong Nebraska football fan, Cully instilled in his daughter a belief in hard work, teamwork, and looking after those around you. "He made it his business to look after everyone," she wrote, adding that he loved their friends so deeply he treated them like his own children.

He also loved to party. Gabrielle made sure to say that clearly: he was always the life of every gathering, and his passions included music, travel, and time with the people he loved most.

What Gabrielle also made clear was that her father's final years were not easy ones, and she didn't shy away from the weight of what her family had been carrying.

She said, "No matter how much you think you know about dementia, nothing prepares you for the painfully slow disappearing of your loved one. First it's repeating words or forgetting little things here or there, then BOOM, he can't swallow or walk."

She described holding onto small moments: eye contact, a smile, even a hand squeeze that could feel like a sign he was still there. "It's brutal and it's what he experienced, but it wasn't who he was," the actress added.

Years in the Making

This wasn't the first time Gabrielle had spoken publicly about what her father was going through. Back in October 2023, she celebrated his 79th birthday at a restaurant, where something unexpected happened: for a few hours, the dad she knew came back.

She wrote that watching her "party loving, Crown drinking, smart ass [sic] Dad return in full form" brought tears to everyone's eyes. She also shared a moment that made people laugh: her father leaned in and whispered, "I'm so happy to see so many Black folks!"

And she finished with, "So happy birthday Dad, we’re already planning your 80th!!"

They did, in fact, make it to his 80th.

The following year, the whole family gathered to celebrate, bringing a little bit of Hawaii to him since he couldn't travel anymore. He was in a wheelchair by then, but the love in the room was loud.

What Dementia Couldn't Take

At that 80th birthday, Gabrielle witnessed something she described as staying with her all day. Her father saw her, told her he loved her, then asked how her mom was, prompting her to give him what she called "the gas face."

Then he got serious. He asked if she was happy. When she said yes, he grinned and asked, "You not taking no [expletive] are you?" She told him never. He said he loved her again.

According to the actress, the whole day reminded her to be a good friend, a loyal neighbor, and to always show up for the people who matter.

The Toll It Took

What few knew was how much her father's care was shaping her professional decisions, too. At an onstage conversation in 2025, she was candid about the financial reality behind her career choices.

"I don't have the luxury of taking all the independent films that I want because I can't afford to pay for my extended family in the way that they have grown accustomed to," she told the audience at the American Black Film Festival.

She explained that the paycheck people imagine celebrities receiving is split far more ways than most realize, and that her father's care was one of the reasons she had to be strategic, not just creative, about the projects she took.

"That's a [expletive] shame, but that's reality," she said.

Grief, Gratitude, and Moving Forward

Still, in her recent tribute to her father, Gabrielle thanked the medical and memory care staff who looked after him in his final years. She called her sisters, who stepped up throughout his illness, heroes.

The actress also acknowledged the complicated feeling that comes at the end of a long illness. She described it as "bewildering" to feel relief that his pain was over, while also sitting with the finality of losing him.

She closed with a moving line:

"I know his love is eternal and will find me in every realm."

And she invited anyone who knew Cully to share their memories in the comments, so the family could hold onto them.

For anyone who has watched a parent fade slowly before losing them, Gabrielle Union said it plainly: she knows she isn't the first or last Daddy's girl to go through this, and she's sending love to every single one.
