Kate Middleton may have just completed a grueling mountain challenge, but it was the family moment that followed that truly sent royal fans into a chatter-filled spiral.

Between Prince George looking suddenly grown-up, Princess Charlotte's emotional reaction, and Kate's outdoorsy post-challenge outfit, the photos gave admirers far more to discuss than anyone expected.

Before the latest pictures had fans zooming in, comparing heights, and praising sweet family moments, the Wales family had already sparked similar conversations earlier in the year. On April 5, 2026, the family attended the Royal Easter Sunday service at Windsor, where George's height quickly became one of the biggest talking points.

Fan reaction quickly centered on Prince George's height, with one commenter asking, "Where has the time gone?!" The remark captured the wider online mood as royal watchers compared the young prince's appearance across recent public moments. | Source: Facebook/People

The Prince and Princess of Wales joined King Charles III and Queen Camilla at St George's Chapel, Windsor, for the traditional Easter Sunday service. The family had not attended in two years, having spent last Easter on a family holiday in Norfolk, and having missed the year prior in the weeks following the Princess of Wales's cancer diagnosis.

And so, their return was something of an occasion, and the Princess of Wales, 44, dressed accordingly. She stepped out in a cream Self Portrait ensemble comprising a tailored blazer adorned with lace appliqués, a belted waist, and a calf-length skirt.

A matching teardrop-shaped hat, decorated with leaf appliqués by London-based Milliner Juliette Botterill, a long-standing favourite of the Princess, completed the monochromatic look.

Kate added Ralph Lauren pumps, a cross pendant necklace, pearl drop earrings that were once a wedding gift to the late Queen Elizabeth II from the Hakim of Bahrain for her 1947 wedding, and a small toffee-coloured purse from London Designer DeMellier.

As for the rest of the Wales family, Princess Charlotte, 10, led the group confidently towards the chapel, waving to the onlookers gathered behind barriers along the way.

Prince Louis, 7, walked alongside the Prince of Wales, and just behind them was a sight that had rather a lot of people reaching for their reading glasses.

Prince George, now 12, is no longer the little boy anyone remembers. The photos from the day show him standing almost level with his mother, and given that the Princess of Wales was in heels, the numbers add up even more impressively.

The internet, as ever, had quite a lot to say. One fan wrote, "I [can't] believe the size of George," while another offered a rather precise assessment, noting, "Prince George is almost as tall as his mother. Actually she's wearing heels so he is as tall as her. Louis is shooting up as well [sic]."

A third commented warmly, "My goodness, George has suddenly shot up in height. Lovely to see them all here, a credit to the Royal Family."

And then came Kate's latest post — the one that made those earlier comments feel like only the beginning. On July 5, 2026, Princess Catherine shared an Instagram carousel featuring family photos taken after she completed the National Three Peaks Challenge.

In the caption, she wrote, "This time last week, completing the National Three Peaks Challenge. A huge thank you to everybody who has supported The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. To find out more or donate, please visit link [sic] in bio 🔗."

It had the relaxed feel of a proud family reunion, with everyone gathered on a gravel path, green hills behind them, and the family dog sitting sweetly at the front.

But as heartwarming as the group photo was, fans quickly found themselves drawn to the children — especially George and Charlotte. In another photo, Kate is seen smiling warmly while greeting George, placing a hand on his back as they stand close together on the path.

The new photos arrived shortly after another wave of online chatter about George looking more grown-up beside his mother. For many fans, the latest carousel only strengthened the feeling that the Wales children are changing fast. | Source: Instagram/princeandprincessofwales

The candid snap has a lovely, unguarded quality to it, showing the Princess of Wales looking delighted and animated after her achievement. A later snap displays Kate embracing Charlotte tightly, with the young royal leaning into her mother in what looked like an emotional moment.

It is the kind of tender image that naturally made fans pause, because the family affection was impossible to miss.

Princess Charlotte became another emotional focal point of the post, with viewers responding warmly to the tender mother-daughter moments. One Instagram commenter wrote, "Charlotte crying 😢 lovely daughter ❤️." | Source: Instagram/princeandprincessofwales

Another shot captures Kate interacting with Charlotte, who appeared visibly moved as she covered part of her face. Nearby, George, Louis, and the family dog are visible in the background, adding to the relaxed, behind-the-scenes feel of the moment.

Then came more family interaction, including Kate walking hand-in-hand with Louis while chatting with William. In that image, William appears sharply dressed in a brown sweater and dark pants, while Kate appears in hiking gear, wearing a cap, backpack, red shorts, socks, and sturdy boots.

George's Grown-up Look and Kate's Hiking Outfit Became the Details Fans Couldn't Ignore

That outfit became part of the online conversation too, because one viewer couldn't resist commenting on Kate's shorts. In another frame, William, George, Charlotte, Louis, and Kate stand together in a loose circle, seemingly chatting after the challenge.

One especially striking photo shows Kate with her arm around George as Louis looks up at her, while Charlotte stands nearby smiling. George's height was again difficult to ignore, and fans quickly picked up right where they had left off after the Easter outing.

The online reaction was swift. Under a Facebook post, one fan wrote, "Charlotte looks EXACTLY like William. I expected Georgie to be his doppelganger, but she won." Another person marveled, "Wow, George has shot up out of nowhere but [sic] I suppose that's what kids do."

A third added, "George is about the same height as his mom! 😮 Where has the time gone?!" And one viewer focused on Kate's hiking outfit, writing, "I can't believe they let her wear shorts in published photos!"

The conversation continued on Instagram, where one commenter exclaimed, "Look at the height of Prince George! Turning into a fine young man."

The post ultimately gave royal watchers more than one talking point: Kate's achievement, Charlotte's emotion, George's growth, and the family's support. That mix is what kept the photos circulating and the comments coming. | Source: Instagram/princeandprincessofwales

Another reacted to the tender mother-daughter moment, saying, "Charlotte crying 😢 lovely daughter ❤️." Meanwhile, one fan praised Kate's appearance, swooning, "Her legs!!!! OMG 😍😍😍😍 she look [sic] so good!!!!" The latest carousel was not the only recent moment that had people talking about George.

George's height remained the thread tying the latest reaction to earlier comments from the family's Easter outing. Several fans noted that he now appears close to Kate's height, turning the carousel into another "when did he get so big?" moment. | Source: Instagram/princeandprincessofwales

Another Recent Mother-Son Outing Had Already Put George in the Spotlight

At the end of June, Entertainment Tonight shared a photo of George with Kate during a royal outing, along with a video of the mother and son sitting in and learning about planes at Royal Air Force Coningsby, which had been reshared from Kensington Palace.

That post also prompted fans to comment on how grown-up George looked beside his mother. One person wrote, "He is as tall as his mummy 😍🔥❤️." Another observed, "He looks so much like his father the older he gets!" while a third added, "Wow! He's so tall for his age." Someone else simply remarked, "Such a handsome young man."

For royal watchers, the fascination is understandable. George has grown up largely in the public eye, but moments like these still seem to catch people by surprise — especially when he suddenly appears nearly as tall as his mother in casual family photos.

Kate's challenge achievement may have been the official reason for the post, but the images gave fans something more personal to react to. There was pride, affection, a few style opinions, and plenty of disbelief over how quickly the Wales children are growing.

And judging by the comments, the photos did exactly what candid royal family moments often do: they made people look twice, compare, smile, and wonder where the time has gone.
