Jeremy Renner built a career portraying fearless characters, most notably Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Off-screen, however, the actor faced a battle far more terrifying than anything scripted for the big screen when a devastating snowplow accident nearly claimed his life.

A Split-Second Decision That Changed Everything

What began as New Year's Day quickly turned into a fight for survival in 2023. While attempting to stop the massive snowplow from continuing its path, Renner was pulled beneath the machine and suffered catastrophic injuries.

The accident immediately prompted an emergency response as neighbors rushed to help while waiting for paramedics to arrive. One of the first people to call for help was nearby resident Rich Kovach, whose frantic 911 call captured the severity of the situation.

"Someone's been run over by a snowcat. Hurry," he told the dispatcher before adding, "You might wanna get life flights out here immediately." As emergency crews made their way to the scene, those nearby did everything they could to keep the injured actor alive.

Reflecting on what he witnessed during an interview with Diane Sawyer months later, Kovach recalled the shocking amount of blood surrounding Renner. He shared:

"It was the blood — the amount of blood, and then he was just in such pain and the sounds that were coming out of him, and there was so much blood in the snow."

Kovach also remembered fearing the worst after seeing the extent of the injuries to Renner's head. "It appeared to me to be cracked wide open, and I could see white," he said. "I don't know if that was his skull [...] but that's what I thought I saw."

His partner, Barb Fletcher, immediately grabbed towels to help slow the bleeding. "I could tell he was really struggling to breathe," she recalled after applying pressure to the actor's head wound.

Renner's nephew, Alex Fries, also remained by his uncle's side throughout the ordeal. Holding the actor's arm in a position that helped him breathe, Fries repeatedly encouraged the Hollywood star to stay with him.

"Just breathe. Just breathe," he said. Looking back on those moments, Fries remembered remaining focused solely on helping his uncle survive until paramedics arrived.

Renner Remembered the Pain

Although the injuries were devastating, Renner later revealed that he remained conscious through much of the ordeal. Speaking with Sawyer, he recalled immediately realizing the extent of the damage after attempting to move.

"Oh, all of it," he replied when asked whether he remembered the pain. "I sort of moved my legs, and I said, 'Oh, that one. That one's really messed up.'" As he lay trapped, the actor also wondered what his future might look like. He recalled thinking:

"What's my body look like? Am I just gonna be, like, a spine and a... and a brain, like a science experiment? Is that my existence now?"

Once hospitalized, "The Avengers" star communicated with his family through sign language while recovering from his injuries. Among the first things he signed was an apology. "I was signing that," he admitted. "'Cause I am sorry."

Every Step Forward Came With Pain

The road back proved just as demanding as surviving the accident itself. During the interview, Sawyer observed Renner standing for the first time after weeks of recovery. "I just got upright yesterday," he declared with a smile. "I just got on my feet yesterday."

Recovery quickly became an all-day commitment. Working alongside chiropractic sports physician Dr. Christopher Vincent, the actor pushed through hours of rehabilitation despite the pain. "It's all mental," he noted. "It's a mental game. Yeah, it hurts like hell."

Dr. Vincent credited the actor's determination as one of the biggest reasons for his remarkable progress. "You're so motivated to heal, to get back to your life," the physician told him. For Renner, giving up was never an option.

In his memoir, "My Next Breath," Renner also recalled resisting what he described as the "charm" of death before returning to his injured body.

"Well, what's the alternative?" he replied. "You know what I mean?" As for his family, they celebrated every milestone, no matter how small. "It's nice to see my sister light up when I can just stand up and walk," Renner revealed.

Despite the progress, the recovery remained far from over. The actor explained that he still lacked sensation in parts of his body and face as surgeons continued repairing injuries that included a spiral leg fracture, facial fractures, and extensive orthopedic damage.

A Near-Death Experience That Changed Everything

Two years after the accident, Renner reflected on another part of the ordeal that he said permanently altered his outlook on life. During a 2025 appearance on "Lorraine," the actor discussed what he described as a near-death experience after his injuries left him clinically dead for a period following the accident.

Asked what he experienced, he acknowledged that putting it into words remained difficult. "Words betray it," he said. "The English language betrays it." Renner went on to describe what he remembered as "this very electric serenity, this peaceful electricity." He continued:

"It's the most vibrant, fantastic, magical peace. [...] No time, no place, no space. It's all of it, everything all at once. And it's peaceful. It's beautiful."

In his memoir, "My Next Breath," Renner also recalled resisting what he described as the "charm" of death before returning to his injured body. "'Oh, there's my eye. That's sitting on the ice, and there's my twisted legs, and I'm struggling to breathe again,'" he remembered thinking.

According to the actor, paramedics later told him his condition remained critical because he had spent roughly 40 to 45 minutes lying on the frozen ground while also suffering from hypothermia.

Finding Strength Through Survival

Looking back, Jeremy Renner has consistently rejected the idea of defining himself by the accident. Speaking with Sawyer, he explained that he refuses to allow those memories to become the focus of his life.

"I refuse to be haunted by that memory that way," he said. Instead, the actor believes the experience strengthened the bond with those who helped him survive and those who stood beside him throughout his recovery. He shared:

"This is why I talk to my family about from all their perspectives, which are horrifying. That I put upon them. We just endured. That's real love. Suffering, but that feeds the seeds of what love is."

That perspective continued to shape his outlook when reflecting on the ordeal in 2025. "Only good things happen when you die," Renner said, describing the lasting sense of gratitude and peace he carried with him after surviving one of the most traumatic experiences of his life.
