A Panic Call in the Dark

Three years ago, deep into an exhausting medical ordeal, Melanie Shatner Gretsch hit a frightening breaking point during the early morning hours.

"I was having a moment and was hysterical," she recalled while opening up about the harrowing ordeal. Desperate for support, she immediately reached for her phone to call her famous dad.

"I called you and said, 'I think I'm dying.'" Fifteen minutes later, the screen icon arrived at her home to wrap her in a warm "daddy bear hug."

He comforted her, assuring her that this overwhelming ordeal would eventually become nothing more than a passing memory. Sitting together in her Los Angeles-area home, the father-daughter duo recently discussed their resilience in People's cover story.

They also posed together in a warm family portrait featured on the magazine's social media post. Reflecting on their close bond, William emphasized, "We're bonded by all kinds of difficulties that we've overcome."

Subtle Warnings and Intuitive Clues

The family's challenging journey first began back in July 2022 when Melanie felt a small bump on her left breast in the middle of the night. Though she initially assumed it was just a simple bug bite, a persistent gut feeling told her to book a same-day imaging appointment.

She had already received a completely clear mammogram just five months prior in February, making the sudden discovery confusing. During her imaging visit, the technician initially noticed nothing concerning until Melanie insisted on rechecking the exact spot.

Upon re-examining the area, the technician gasped, noting that the small spot easily could have been missed entirely. A subsequent biopsy confirmed the serious reality facing the sixty-one-year-old mother of two.

William was deeply shaken upon hearing the alarming news regarding his youngest daughter, admitting, "I was devastated." He immediately stepped in financially, telling her not to worry about expensive medical bills so she could focus entirely on healing.

A Shocking Dual Diagnosis

Further medical scans revealed that Melanie was battling HER2-positive breast cancer that had already spread to lymph nodes in her chest, classifying her diagnosis as stage 4.

Over nearly eighteen exhausting months at UCLA Health, she endured chemotherapy, targeted drug infusions, thirty radiation treatments, and a double mastectomy. The physical side effects of chemotherapy were grueling, leaving her feeling nauseous while struggling through treatment.

Just as Melanie was approaching the final stretch of her long medical journey, an unexpected blow struck the family in June 2023. A growing lump on William's cheek raised immediate concerns after a family doctor initially suspected a routine blocked salivary gland.

A month later, a plastic surgeon friend examined William while they were out riding horses and urgently advised him to have the tumor removed. Biopsies confirmed the worst: William was facing stage 4 malignant melanoma that had spread to his lungs and brain.

Medical Breakthroughs and Recovery

Facing daunting odds, both father and daughter put their complete trust in leading specialists and modern medical advances. Dr. Carlie Thompson highlighted that Melanie received an aggressive treatment plan utilizing "groundbreaking" targeted therapies.

Reflecting on her progress, Dr. Thompson stated, "The unique and remarkable aspect of her story was that because she had limited metastatic disease and a type of breast cancer for which we have progressive treatments for, we were able to, with a lot of treatment, get her to the point where she has no evidence of disease."

Against all odds, by late 2024, both Shatner and Melanie received the joyful news that they were completely cancer-free. Melanie remembered hearing her father cry for only the third time in her life when she shared her clean bill of health. | Source: Getty Images

A Transformed Outlook on Life

Surviving their dual health scares completely transformed the family's perspective and brought daily gratitude into sharp focus. Reflecting on her journey, Melanie shared, "[Overcoming cancer] changed my life. I'm not so afraid anymore, and there's so much freedom and joy."

Now, the father and daughter are channeling their experiences into helping others by launching a new weekly podcast titled "No Time but Now" on July 29. The series will feature insightful interviews with health experts, researchers, and fellow survivors.

William Shatner continues to keep busy with two upcoming books and two music records set for release by early 2027. Above all, the family prioritizes spending time together, gathering every Sunday for large family dinners with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
