The GMA host was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, myelodysplastic syndrome, in 2012. A form of cancer, it attacks the bone marrow that results in the reduction in the number of healthy blood cells.
“After that amount of time, you wonder if you’re going to be able to come back. To anybody who is on their medical leave right now, keep believing, keep moving, keep breathing.”

Roberts took a year-long leave of absence from work in order to submit to the procedure. The most effective therapy in fighting her cancer was a bone marrow transplant and she was able to complete the procedure successfully.
Now, she is back at work, but she will have to wait for about five years to know if she has been completely cured of the disease. The host was visibly ecstatic to share the news that she had overtaken the five years cancer-free mark.
Fans were moved by her words, while she expressed her gratitude to her doctors for their support and their wholehearted conviction that she would be a winner at the end.
GMA won a 2012 Peabody Award for the coverage entitled Robin’s Journey, which chronicled her fight against the myelodysplastic syndrome. She has been an important member of the GMA host team since 1995.
