Woman's dog noticed something in a storm drain. Getting closer, she realised it was a newborn
A baby girl survived miraculously survived after she was discovered in an abandoned state in a storm drainage.
63-year-old Charmaine Keevy's pet dog, George, started barking at something lying in the storm drainage in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
According to Metro, she later discovered that it was a naked body of a newborn child lying on the drainage ground. Upon getting closer, Keevy realized that it was a little baby girl crying.
She then signaled for a passing car to stop and they together managed to open the concrete cover of the drain with a steel bar. 60-year-old Viljoen entered the six-feet-deep drain to retrieve the baby, the online source suggested.
The man informed that a colony of red ants had surrounded the baby. But she was lucky that the ants were higher up in drain rather than down at her level.
‘I just do not know why anyone could do this to a newborn baby, but I was just so glad that we were able to help her and save her life," the source quoted Viljoen as stating.
When he found her, he realized that the baby still had her umbilical cord attached. He then instructed Keevy to call the emergency services as soon as possible.
They took her to the hospital, where doctors were able to diagnose that the little baby was suffering from hypothermia and respiratory issues. While treating her, hospital staff named the girl Grace April.
Keevy later opened up about how finding her had been a stroke of luck. "I usually take a different route on my dog walk but for some reason went another way."
She further explained that she believed there was some sort of a "plan and a purpose" for the little girls' life. She also called it a "miracle."
