The public was a little surprised to hear of Nicole Murphy and Michael Strahan's split, however, it seems as though the couple had anticipated the split.

According to E! News, a source close to the pair had stated:

‘They have been on and off for two years. There have been a lot of ups and downs and back and forth. Sometimes they were together, sometimes they were not,’

The source also added that:

‘They were both aware all along of their relationship status. No one did anything wrong. They were both aware of their situation and it was a complicated relationship. There are no big surprises between them.’

The source also revealed to E! News that Michael’s work as a morning talk show co-host in New York City had turned their relationship to a long distance one because Murphy was based in Los Angeles.

Their complicated relationship had led them to call off their engagement however they have decided to keep things polite and civil.

‘They are both moving on and they are trying to be respectful of each other,’

The source said.

However new reports have suggested that the 42-year-old sportsman had actually been ‘unfaithful’ which had somehow triggered the split.

‘Nicole first got wind Michael might be dating another woman in early July and started investigating.'

A source told TMZ.

She had started investigating when she heard the rumours and when she had finally being convinced the allegations were true she had immediately decided to go public with the breakup.

And when she was ‘finally convinced’ the allegation was true, Nicole ‘immediately decided to go public’ with the split.

It was reported also that Michael Strahan had no clue that his fiancée would be announcing their breakup just as was about to be inducted into the prestigious NFL Hall of Fame.

Insiders close to the former couple said that the split had been in the works for a while as the two had broken their engagement several weeks before.

However, it looks like both the stars are handling the split well.
