5 dead, including 4 children, as a result of Florida hostage situation
An armed man named Gary Lindsey Jr. barricaded himself in an Orlando, Florida apartment on Sunday night. With him were two of his own children and two children that belonged to his girlfriend.
On Monday the Orlando Police briefed the media on the incident. According to their Twitter post of the briefing video, Lindsey killed himself and the children.
Gary Lindsey Jr., 35, was found dead along with children aged 1, 6, 10 and 11. Police found the five bodies upon entering the apartment around 9 p.m. on Monday.
City of Orlando Police Chief John Mina revealed at a press conference later that night that officers had been communicating with Lindsey prior to the deaths. The officers tried to reach a peaceful solution, but the suspect had a poor phone connection
When officers tried to get Lindsey another phone to continue the negotiations, they saw at least one child had been shot. They decided to enter the apartment.
The hostage situation began Sunday night, shortly after Lindsey's girlfriend contacted the police to report that he'd battered her. She met officers outside and directed them toward an apartment in the Westbrook complex.
"The situation has a tragic and sad ending. We realize it's been a difficult day for the entire community."

Shortly thereafter the suspect fired a shot that critically wounded an officer at around 11:45 p.m. Officer Kevin Valencia, suffered a "very serious and significant injury.
He underwent surgery on Monday morning at Orlando Regional Medical Center. On Tuesday he was still in critical condition but he's expected to survive.
Lindsey had previously been arrested on domestic violence and arson charges. He was currently on felony probation.
