Regina King, who has worked as an actress for decades and is now building a career as a director, uploaded photos to Instagram to honor Marla Gibbs on her birthday.

The first image showed a very young Regina hugging ‘Mama’ Marla from behind when they were working together on the sitcom 227. The photo showed how happy both actresses were as well as the special bond they shared.

For the second image, both actresses were older. It showed Regina posing with a grey suit, a police badge, and a gun portraying a police officer while Marla wore a loose pink shirt covered by a purple coat.

The next images portrayed both women sharing their love as they appeared very close to each other flashing their smiles to the camera.

Even though all the images attracted a lot of attention, Regina’s caption was the highlight of the post. She started by wishing Marla a happy birthday and saying that the actress was a national treasure

Regina added that she learned from Marla how to give to another actor even when the camera wasn’t on her, the importance of hitting her ‘mark,’ how to find her light, and how to be a professional in such a difficult world as it is the entertainment industry.

The 47-year-old actress pointed out that Marla was one of the first women to ‘sell, produce, and star’ her own show, 227. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the 87-year-old actress did all that while running her own restaurant club, which was the destination for all the ‘Jazz greats.’

Regina also said that Marla ‘blazed a trail’ that made her know it was possible to be successful when she was younger. She finally pointed out that words could never express how much she loves and appreciates Marla.

‘Mama’ Marla received five nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series with The Jeffersons and got seven NAACP Image Awards throughout her entire career.
