Monica Calhoun has experience with blindness, as her younger brother Eric was born with the disability. But fans of the actress were surprised in 2013 to learn that her young son is also blind.

His disability was revealed when Monica took her then 13-year-old son with her as her "date" to the premiere of her movie, The Best Man Holiday.

Since then, she has posted plenty of photos of her son to her Instagram account, sharing their adventures together, and showing the boy all the love a mother should show her child.

At the beginning of June, she shared more photos of herself and her son attending a concert of Sly and the Family Stone's music.

In the photos, Monica can be seen wearing a purple headband with a flower on it, as well as a dark leather jacket. Her son is wearing a dark jacket, and both mother and son are smiling as they enjoy the live music.

The two images are very similar, showing a dark sky and lit stage equipment in the background.

Monica first moved to California as a child with her mother Lorraine Calhoun and brother Eric from the Virgin Islands.

Lorraine made headlines in 1976 when she pushed lawmakers in the Virgin Islands to adopt similar laws to the United States when it came to low income families that had children with special needs, due to the high cost of health care.

Because of Eric's blindness, Monica grew up in a very different environment to most children, learning compassion and sensitivity to people who are other than herself because of her brother's disability.

"Teaching him things that I've learned...and then vice versa somewhat. Me spending time with him at his programs...like 'The Braille Institute'...just different little things. So I got a chance to experience life on a different level. Patience in watching these people that volunteer to work with children that have some sort of impairment," she said of her childhood.

Over the years, Monica has earned 49 acting credits to her name, with some of her most notable roles in films such as The Best Man, Players Club, Bagdad Café, and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.

More recently, she has appeared on The Best Man sequel, The Best Man Holiday, reprising her role as Mia. She has also taken roles in Diary Of A Single Mom, The New Addition Story, and guest starred on Grey's Anatomy and NYPD Blue.
