"

The Good Doctor

's message of inclusiveness resonates with our viewers and is a hallmark of what we aim to accomplish here at ABC,"

president Channing Dungey said when announcing that season two would definitely be happening.

The Good Doctor stars Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a resident at the fictional St. Bonaventure Hospital in San Jose with autism and savant syndrome, who moves to California to work at a prestigious hospital.

“Alone in the world and unable to personally connect with those around him, Shaun uses his extraordinary medical gifts to save lives and challenge the skepticism of his colleagues,” an official synopsis says.

The show also features a diverse roster of actors and characters, all of whom have become fan favorites, including Chuku Modu as Dr. Jared Kalu, Nicholas Gonzalez as Dr. Neil Melendez and Antonia Thomas as Dr. Claire Browne.

Richard Schiff also stars as Shaun's mentor, Dr. Aaron Glassman. At the end of the first season, fans were left with a major cliffhanger: Dr. Glassman was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer.

While little is known about season 2, Lisa Edelstein, who starred as Dr. Lisa Cuddy on House, has been brought on as Dr. Blaize, an oncologist who returns to St. Bonaventure after she was briefly suspended

Her character will reportedly help treat Dr. Glassman’s cancer. And, while Dr. Blaize and Dr. Glassman may not get along or be on the best of terms, he knows she is the best person to help him in the fight for his life.

Announced on Tuesday, July 24, via the show’s official social media pages, the surgical team of St. Bonaventure Hospital officially heads back to work (on our television screens) on Monday, September 24.

The series, which became the top-rated freshman drama and averaged 16.9 million viewers, making it the most-watched new ABC series since Lost started in 2004, was given a second season renewal in March.

Fans can attribute The Good Doctor's success to a brilliant young cast, the creative mind behind House, David Shore, and Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-O), who spearheaded the project and is its Executive Producer.
