Here's what happens to your body if you stop drinking diet soda, according to a doctor
Diet soda is a preferred drink for many Americans. But this popular drink also has a lot of health concerns associated with it.
A report published in the journal Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism found that diet soda drinkers also have the same health issues that regular soda drinkers have.
The report was published as an opinion piece in the journal after reviewing dozens of studies published in the past five years regarding the relationship between consuming diet soda and health outcomes. It was reported that the results “shocked” the researchers.
‘Honestly, I thought that diet soda would be marginally better compared to regular soda in terms of health,’ Susan Swithers, the author of the piece and a behavioral neuroscientist and professor of psychological sciences wrote. ‘But in reality, it has a counterintuitive effect.’

The very component that makes diet soda special is actually causing a problem for the consumers, according to the researchers. The artificial sweeteners in diet soda that fulfills the craving for a sweet taste without calories may do more harm.
According to her, fake sugar teases the body by pretending to give it real food. However, when the body does not get the components that it expects to get, it cannot decide on how to respond.

‘You've messed up the whole system, so when you consume real sugar, your body doesn't know if it should try to process it because it's been tricked by the fake sugar so many times,’ Swithers stated.
CNN diet and fitness expert Dr. Melina Jampolis further linked this phenomenon with relating consumption of artificial sweeteners to weight gain.

Jampolis stated that the taste of sweet causes the release of insulin, which lowers blood sugar. But if carbohydrates are not consumed, it causes a drop in blood sugar, which triggers hunger and cravings for sugar.
However, CNN reported that the American Beverage Association claimed the report to be just an ‘opinion piece’ rather than a ‘scientific study.’
There are several other disadvantages to being a diet soda drinker. As per other few studies, here are a few more reasons one should consider to stop consuming the drink.
