Bill Cosby will be spending the next 3 to 10 years at a brand-new state of the art prison which is equipped with maximum security. The comedian who was charged with sexual assault by Andrea Constand was moved to Pennsylvania’s State Correctional Institute at Phoenix from Montgomery County courthouse last Tuesday.

The prison is in Collegeville, around 30 miles northwest of Philadelphia, looks very modern, and almost not like a prison. In fact, the prison was described by John Wetzel, Secretary of Corrections, as:

“A 21st century institution with advanced security features, environmentally efficient infrastructure and modern work and housing spaces.”

The prison’s facilities also include a gym, over 30 rooms for classes, a barbershop, and a chapel.

Cosby will be staying in an 8 by 13 feet and 10 feet tall single cell unit which includes basic necessities such as toiletries, linens, towels and state-issued boots. Abiding by prison policies, he is required to wear a uniform and will only be allowed phone calls and visitation hours according to what is written as their policy. He will also have mandatory sex offender counseling, violence prevention, and recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction, among all others.

The comedian, at the age of 81, was convicted last April for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand. Concerns have been raised regarding the protection of Cosby pertaining to risks because of his high profile and old age, which might lead to harm or further health conditions.

As of today, Cosby is staying alone in his cell which is across the prison’s medical center. Pennsylvania Department of Corrections spokesman Amy Wordon said:

“The ultimate goal would be to integrate him into general population. He’ll be there on an entry basis as we determine what programs he’s eligible for… Obviously we’d be taking into account an inmate’s physical condition, their mental condition. But most people want to make a little bit of money. It’s totally up to him.”

It seems that Cosby is getting a bit of special treatment during his first day in prison after he was given a brand new cell with amenities, as well as a special meal prepared for him, which even included some pudding for dessert.

While many inmates get some meatloaf and rice, he got a course meal.
