'What’s Happening!' star Danielle Spencer has undergone emergency brain surgery

Dr. Danielle Spencer, who has battled several health challenges over the years, recently had to undergo an emergency brain surgery to save her life.

She is now relying on the public’s goodwill to make a full recovery.

Fans of the 80’s hit show, “What’s Happening” will remember Spencer who played the quick-witted Dee Thomas, as well as her popular line:

“Oooh, I'm gonna tell mama.”

The former actress turned Veterinarian had to undergo surgery to remove a bleeding hematoma that formed due to a car accident 42 years ago.

Spencer had been left in a coma after the fatal accident that claimed the life of her step-father, Tim Pelt. The crash also left her with a broken leg, arm and pelvis, and a spinal cord injury.

Sometime this year, on the anniversary of that unfortunate incident, Spencer began experiencing intense headaches that saw her going in and out of the doctor’s office for a while.

She eventually became unconscious as a result of the headaches and had to be operated on immediately.

The duration of Spencer’s recovery, at this point, is uncertain because of her recent battle with breast cancer.

The actress revealed in October 2014 that she was diagnosed with breast cancer and confessed her devastation at the news:

"With everything that I've been through with the spinal cord injury, I said I know God is not going to give me another affliction. So I was completely shocked when the doctors told me."

At the time, Spencer was considering many treatment options but confirmed that she’s leaning more towards surgery and hoping that “after that, there won't be any chemotherapy or radiation involved."

She eventually had a double mastectomy and afterward referred to the period as an “awful time.” While trying to fight back the tears, Spencer told OWN:

“I had to keep praying, and everyone would try to encourage me. They didn’t want me to think of suicide, even though I had considered it. It was definitely a rough time because it ravishes your body, and also mentally, it changes you.”

Now, Spencer is fighting for her life again, and her friends have created a GoFundMe campaign to raise “funds [that] will help with treatment and medication” as part of her lengthy recovery in physical rehabilitation.

Apart from starring in ABC’s “What’s Happening” and a host of other shows including "Days of Our Lives," Spencer has the honor of being the first black female child to star regularly in a television series as exhibited in the National Museum of African American history and culture in Washington DC.
