Tom Cruise imposed weird marriage rules on Katie Holmes after their split

During their nearly six-year marriage, actress Katie Holmes had to endure some strange rules imposed on her by her husband, Tom Cruise.

Among some other unusual demands, the "Mission: Impossible" actor reportedly required his ex-wife to have a "silent labor" when she was giving birth to their daughter, Suri, as the Church of Scientology believes noise will cause the newborn psychology harm.

The world was shocked when the pair split up in 2012, after just half a decade of marriage. They were considered to be one of Hollywood's "it-couples."

When they announced their divorce, Holmes quite literally fled the country to get herself and her daughter away from Cruise and the Church.

The Church has largely been blamed for their divorce, with rumors doing the rounds that Holmes didn't want her daughter involved in the religion. The 56-year-old actor reportedly referred to the religion whenever they needed to make major life decisions.

It was believed that Scientology elders had helped Tom choose his life partner.

Lawrence Wright, author of "Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison Belief," claimed that Cruise invited Scientology elders to hold screen tests to find his next wife after he split from actress Nicole Kidman.

But the Church of Scientology denied this, with a spokesperson saying:

"There was no project, secret or otherwise, ever conducted by the Church to find a bride, via audition or otherwise, for any member."

Wright said that Lindsay Lohan, Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Alba were among the stars "auditioned" for the role of Tom's next wife.

When Holmes was pregnant with Suri in 2005, Cruise bought his own at-home ultrasound machine so he could monitor his wife's pregnancy throughout.

Doctors criticized this decision, pointing out that if something were wrong he would not be able to tell given his lack of medical training, and that he could be administering unnecessary sound waves to the unborn baby.

The decision that Holmes was not allowed to make any sound during labor and birth was a result of a ruling by the Church of Scientology.

Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard, had written: "Particularly during birth, absolute silence must be maintained and the more gentle the delivery, the better."

After their divorce, Cruise also allegedly prohibited Holmes from publicly dating anyone for five years, and from speaking publicly about their relationship ever. Holmes, who wanted a divorce as quickly as possible, so she agreed.
