A blissful one-year marriage is what Serena Williams is currently basking in and that’s thanks to Oprah Winfrey who gave her some sound advice on how to choose the perfect mate.

WHAT OPRAH ADVICED HER

In an interview for Allure’s February issue, Williams opened up about the words of wisdom she received from the media mogul which stuck to her and guided her in finding the right man.

“Never let anyone dim your light,” was the advice Winfrey gave her at a time when the men she dated didn’t have the necessary qualities that allowed her to thrive in her career and feel secure in her love life.

Not until she met Ohanian who embodied those qualities. Williams affirms,

“Alexis doesn’t dim my light.”

She adds,

“He puts me in the light, even if I don’t want to be. He pushes me to further points I never thought about. It always was something that I could see in some relationships — my light would be dimmer. Now I feel like I can shine really bright and still do everything that I want to do.”

HOW HER HUSBAND SHINES THE LIGHT ON HER

Serena isn’t lying. We’ve been witness to the many times Ohanian rallied behind his wife and put her in a pedestal to shine like a beacon. He lauds her accomplishments as an athlete, a wife, and a mother and surprises her with grand gestures any chance he gets.

Let’s look back at those memorable moments when Ohanian shined the light on his wife.

Remember when he lined the highway with billboards that read “G.M.O.T” (Greatest Momma of All Time) celebrating Williams’ return to the hardcourt after giving birth to their daughter, Olympia?

Or the time he whisked her to Venice to cheer her up after her Wimbledon loss and just because she felt like having Italian?

Who could also forget his tribute to his “queen” during their first year anniversary?

More often than not, Ohanian was there to cheer on his wife in every match along with their one-year-old daughter. He would celebrate her win and still deem her a winner even when she loses.

Williams is on point when she says her husband doesn’t dim her light. He fuels her light so it shines brightest.
