The Hollywood icon has enjoyed one of the most spectacular careers, but he has his own share of setbacks as well, one of which is his divorce with his first wife, Diandra Luker.

Back in 2013, the 74-year-old actor spoke candidly during an interview about his separation from Luker and the tragic circumstances that led to it.

Douglas also looked back on his life at the time and revealed that the biggest regret of his life was that he did not divorce Luker much sooner.

The actor stated that his imminent divorce with his first wife happened about eight to 10 years later than he would have really liked.

“I know I’m going to get into trouble here. I have nothing against her and in fact I’m very fond of my first wife. But we should have ended that marriage eight or 10 years earlier,” he told Mirror.

Douglas added that he also regretted seeing a marriage counsellor for a much longer time than his marriage really deserved.

The actor said, “It took me too long to realise that if you go to a marriage counsellor to resolve problems, it’s in his interest to keep the marriage going.”

He claimed that his first wife would now agree with him that their counselor tried to keep their marriage intact only because he would have otherwise been out of business.

Douglas and Luker tied the wedding knot in March 1977. The couple separated in 1995, and finally after 23 years of togetherness, they divorced in 2000.

The legendary actor is currently married to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, whom he first met back in 1996 at Deauville Film Festival while promoting his movie, “A Perfect Murder.”

Zeta-Jones revealed in another interview that they were introduced to one another by their mutual friends, Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith.

"Nine months later, I'm still having long conversations with him on the phone, having great dinner dates, constantly wondering, 'Why are we not together?'" Zeta-Jones recalled.

23 years later, the pair are still together and going strong as one of the power couples of the entertainment industry.
