The legendary multi-talented Doris Day exited the public eye decades ago, but the icon's doings remain of interest as she is still going strong while her only remaining relative is handsome and all grown up.

Referred to as America’s Sweetheart, Doris left the fame of Hollywood behind in 1973 for a life of animal rescue and welfare. She also started the Doris Day Animal Foundation, which provides veterinary students with scholarships, accepting applications year round.

During an interview with Closer Weekly Doris said:

“I’ve been blessed with good health, wonderful pals, lovely fans and so many precious four-leggers. What more could I ask for? I loved my singing and acting career, but my greatest accomplishment is the important work I do for my charities."

However, in 2004, Doris lost her only child, Terry Melcher to cancer at the age of 62. With music in his blood, Terry became a musician like his mother, Doris. From his marriage to a woman named Terese, Ryan was born.

When Terry died Doris was devastated as she said:

“My son was the love of my life. We talked every day, and I miss him very much. [But] we can’t change the past. I think you have to get through the bad times to appreciate the good things in life.”

In the 1970’s Doris moved to Carmel followed by Ryan, who was just a boy at the time, and his parents. Together they joined another local family in business and ran a favorite seaside vacation spot, the Cypress Inn.

As a child, Ryan spent a lot of time at the Inn interacting with pets and their owners, having a love for animals much like his grandmother Doris.

Ryan grew up exploring the Peninsula, surfing, mountain biking, playing gold while attending Carmel Mission School, and of course, helping his grandmother at the Inn.

But his life took a different turn. While exploring Carmel during his youth, he became an expert on its property.

Doris’s grandson went on to become an award-winning luxury real estate agent in Carmel and Pebble Beach. As a lifelong resident, he specializes in high-end properties with over a decade of experience in the industry under the belt.

Well known for his state of the art marketing, in terms of drone footage and the like, he focuses on estate, downtown, golf course, ocean view and oceanfront properties in the Peninsula.

The time following the death of Ryan’s father is said to be not the only time Doris seemed not to be herself. In 2013, Sydney Wood, Doris’s personal assistant, bodyguard, and close friend expressed concern for her wellbeing as he told MailOnline:

“Doris isn’t what she used to be, and she’s now confined to her house for much of her days. She used to have the right people taking care of her. But her house is full of different people now. They’re with her because she’s Doris Day. I worry they are not looking after her well enough.”

The actress and animal lover, still going strong in 2019, shared her secrets to a happy and fulfilling life.
