Common Talks Love Advice He Received from Michelle Obama

Common imparts the sound advice he received from Michelle Obama regarding finding the perfect mate. “A lot of the things she said to me is just like wisdom," he says.

Michelle Obama’s marriage to former president Barrack Obama makes for relationship goals so it makes sense that rapper Common would lean to the former first lady for relationship advice.

During his recent sit-down with Stephen Colbert on “The Late Show,” Common revealed the words of wisdom he picked up from Michelle the last time he visited “The Late Show” and she was promoting her book, “Becoming.”

“A lot of the things she said to me is just like wisdom. ‘Cause sometimes I’m always looking for the perfect person. I need this perfect but I’m not perfect so what am I doing?

ON MICHELLE'S AUTHENTIC ADVICE

Both from Chicago, Common said they instantly connected.

“We actually sat right here in this space and was talking relationships,” the 47-year-old who’s never been married said. “She gives me great love advice, too. I mean, who else would you want love advice from but the great Michelle Obama?”

The motivational book author went on to say that Michelle’s advice was “authentic and real and honest.”

“A lot of the things she said to me is just like wisdom. ‘Cause sometimes I’m always looking for the perfect person. I need this perfect but I’m not perfect so what am I doing? But she was like, ‘Look, you’re going to have to compromise sometimes, right?’”

ON SEARCHING FOR THE PERFECT MATE

In a nutshell, according to the actor, Michelle advised him to adjust his expectations and focus on the more important values when finding his perfect mate.

“She’s just saying, some of the stuff you want in a person, that’s not the real values. Just look for the real core values.”

The irony of it all, Common joked is that in Michelle’s case, “she didn’t compromise with the great President Obama did she?” and laughs.

HIS CURRENT RELATIONSHIP STATUS

Common famously dated Serena Williams and Erykah Badu. His more recent relationship was with political analyst Angela Rye. They dated for a year and reportedly split in March 2018. However, the ex-couple sparked reconciliation rumors lately when they were spotted on several occasions together.

HIS IDEAL WOMAN

It’s possible Common may be giving their relationship a second chance taking to heart Michelle’s advice. When asked by Stephen what he looks for in a woman, he said,

“I love people who are caring, loving, just openhearted. I like intelligent but fun people. I like people who treat other people well. And I like a woman who challenges me, who challenges me to grow. She helps me to grow and I help her to grow. We support each other and we can go out and do good in the world and have fun. Have a good glass of wine.”
