Kanye West Shares Fond Memory of Late Mom Donda in David Letterman Interview

Kanye West opens up about the special toy his late mother bought him and how significant it is today now that she's gone. Kim Kardashian watches in admiration.

In a rare moment, Kanye West opened up about his late mother and revealed a touching story about her.

IN MEMORY OF HIS MOTHER

West appeared on David Letterman’s Netflix show, “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction” and moved viewers with his story about his mother, Donda West. In the audience was his wife Kim Kardashian, who appeared teary-eyed as she watched him in admiration recounting one of his final moments with his mother.

"This would have been the funnest time of her life," he tells David of his mother who he envisions would, “have those kids running around that house” and buying them toys.

Kanya brought up his mother while speaking about his growing family in the promotional video for the show. He and Kim just welcomed their fourth child via surrogate on Mother’s Day.

At that point, Kanye recalls a moment when his mother was still alive and she bought her a toy too.

"I remember my mother bought me a bear that was multicolored, and I was very into (Japanese artist) Takashi Murakami at the time of (my) third album, 'Graduation,' so she bought it and she said, 'That kind of feels like Murakami.”

He recalls saying he didn’t want the bear and telling her “that ain’t no Takashi Murakami bear.”

Donda died in 2007 after suffering from complications from cosmetic surgery. Her death took a toll on the star. In fact, he began having public outbursts after.

When his mother died a few weeks later, the singer looked for that bear.

"I did everything I could to find that bear (and) place that bear on top of all the Takashi Murakami stuff I had in the house."

THE IMPACT OF DONDA'S DEATH

Donda died in 2007 after suffering from complications from cosmetic surgery. Her death took a toll on the star. In fact, he began having public outbursts after and even released an album that depicted his sad state called “808s and Heartbreak” the following year.

“She's here with us and she's guiding us."

In 2016, he had a mental breakdown suspected to be triggered by his mother’s death anniversary. Last year, he released an album dedicated to her and even asked her surgeon who he once blamed for Donda’s death to appear in the album’s cover.

STILL AROUND

Today, Kanye believes his mother is still very much around. He told David, “she's here with us and she's guiding us."

Kim smiled from the audience and promoted the clip on Twitter.

"Kanye opens up to David Letterman like you’ve never seen him on My Next Guest,” she wrote before revealing details about its airing.

A FAMILY GROWING SPIRITUALLY

Kim and Kanye have been recently blessed with another son, Psalm, who was born via surrogate like his older sister, Chicago, 1. Psalm now completes the family which also includes his eldest sister, North, 5, and older brother, Saint, 3.

Psalm’s name, lifted from a book in the bible which means “song” is reportedly a reference to the family’s current state in terms of their spirituality. The Wests have been attending Sunday services since January with Kanye officiating. It is believed the rapper’s more peaceful existence these days is the result of this. The children are involved too with Kim often sharing clips of North’s participation. She would join the choir in singing and dancing to the delight of her parents.

CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS

Kim and Kanye recently marked their fifth year anniversary as husband and wife. Kim shared images from their wedding day on her Instagram revealing never-before-seen moments from that memorable occasion in Italy.

The couple reportedly celebrated by watching Celine Dion's concert. It was a surprise from Kanye to his wife. They even took photos with the legendary singer after.
