Kylie Jenner Threw 'Handmaid's Tale'-Themed Party and Fans Got Mad

Kylie Jenner threw a "Handmaid's Tale" party for her friend and got harshly criticized for it. "This is offensive" according to one out of a great number of Twitter users who came after the reality star.

Kylie Jenner has a track record of throwing amazing parties so it came as a disappointment to many when she hosted a recent bash for her friend with a “Handmaid’s Tale” theme.

WHY FANS ARE FURIOUS

Kylie’s posts from her party left a bitter taste among fans most especially because her choice of theme showed her lack of sensitivity.

Those familiar with the Hulu series are aware that its story centers around women wearing red robes and who are enslaved, violated, and used as a bilogical vessel by the rich and powerful as a solution to their infertility. It’s the exploitation of women at its worst.

So when Kylie appeared on her Instagram wearing a “Handmaid’s Tale”-inspired robe, that was all Twitterdom needed to cast stones at her.

THE PARTY IN QUESTION

The affair was in celebration of her friend, Anastasia Karanikolaou’s 21st birthday and it transformed the reality star’s home into Gilead territory complete with staff dressed as the show’s “Marthas” and cocktails bearing the names "Praise Be Vodka" and "Under His Eye Tequila."

Kylie shared footage from the occasion where she welcomes her guests by saying, “Praise be, ladies. Welcome, welcome,” phrases uttered on the show.

“You know “The Handmaid’s Tale” is my favorite show ever,” she adds. “Welcome to Gilead.”

THE BACKLASH

If Kylie thought fans would be impressed with her party, she was wrong. Instead, she earned a ton of backlash for it. She was accused of orchestrating a “tone deaf” party without regard for the implications of what she was celebrating.

Kylie has yet to comment on these hateful messages, if she even will, and she did not take down her posts either. It won’t be a surprise if she chooses not to address the negativity as she has done several times in the past.

However, there are also cases when the 21-year-old responds to clarify issues. One of these is the question of whether she deserves the title, self-made billionaire. When Forbes deemed her the youngest to claim that title this year, Kylie was proud of the achievement. But her happiness was spoiled by those who consider her fortune a result of her family’s show.

In March, she addressed the issue by claiming her wealth was born out of her own sweat to build her cosmetics empire. She did admit, however, that the popularity she gained by being part of her family’s reality show and whatever she earned there helped build the foundation for her company. She also said every cent she used to start Kylie Cosmetics was hers and not from her parents.

Should Kylie address the latest controversy she’s embroiled in, we’re certain she’ll still get away with it. After all, she managed to breeze through every intrigue in her life, and every decision she made that people questioned including keeping her pregnancy a secret for nine months.
