Serena Williams' History Lesson on Braiding in Photo with Daughter Olympia
There’s a reason Serena Williams is called the Greatest Of All Time. The tennis champion recently transformed a braiding session with her daughter into a makeshift history class for her 11 million followers.
Following her shocking defeat in the French Open, Serena is back to mommy-mode and recently treated one-year-old Olympia Ohanian to some fun time in mommy’s “salon.”
Serena, 37, took to Instagram with a photo of herself braiding Olympia’s hair and the little one looked like she was having the time of her life, flashing a toothy smile at the camera.
'It’s a way of life for all Africans. Our hair is a piece of art itself'
The post’s caption was an entirely different story; a shift from "Serena’s Salon" to "Serena’s Class." The 23-time Grand Slam champion began by tracing the geographical origins of braiding and its cultural significance:
“Braiding started in Africa with the Himba people of Namibia. We have been braiding our hair for centuries. In many African tribes braided hairstyles were a unique way to identify each tribe. Because of the time it would take people would often take the time to socialize. It began with the elders braiding their children, then the children would watch and learn from them. The tradition of bonding was carried on for generations, and quickly made its way across the world.”
“I am honored to share this bonding experience with my own daughter and add another generation of historic traditions,” she added.
Social media users were all for the history lesson as well as the mommy-daughter time and made sure to let Serena know in the comments.
“This is just so cute!!!!!!!” gushed plus-size model Ashley Graham while actress Halle Berry said: “Love this.”
“It’s a way of life for all Africans. Our hair is a piece of art itself,” chimed in a third fan. “Well done, mama.”
Braiding now joins the long list of things Serena enjoys with Olympia, who she shares with her Tech mogul husband, Alexis Ohanian.
Late last month, while the athlete was still in the French Open, little Olympia got to spend some time with both parents at a five-star hotel spa in Paris.
Serena shared a photo from the family day-off on social media and let us in on a little secret: she and her daughter are currently obsessed with “The Little Mermaid.”
Serena and Olympia also enjoy spending time in the toddler’s sandbox, hanging out at the beach, and let’s not forget one of Olympia’s favorite pastimes as well: cheering on her tennis star mom from the stands.
