Lil Nas X Believes He Was 'Pushed by the Universe' When He Came out during Pride Month
Lil Nas X came out as gay on World Pride Day and he believes that Fate played a hand.
Rapper Lil Nas X is just 20-years-old and he is having an epic year.
His breakout single "Old Town Road" has dominated the Top 100 Billboard for the last 19 weeks, and he came out to the world as gay during Gay Pride month on Twitter.
“I never would have done that if I wasn’t in a way pushed by the universe. In June, I’m seeing Pride flags everywhere and seeing couples holding hands — little stuff like that.” Lil Nas X
COMING OUT IN THE NOTORIOUSLY HOMOPHOBIC WORLD OF RAP
Lil Nas revealed that he had already come out to his father and sister earlier in June, and he decided it was time to tell the world, a risky endeavor in a genre notoriously homophobic such as rap.
He posted a tweet asking fans to listen closely to the lyrics of his song "c7osure," and closing the message with a rainbow and stars emoji.
“Some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care, some of y’all not [going to (expletive) with me] no more. But before this month ends I want y’all to listen closely to c7osure,” he said.
FANS REACT TO LIL NAS X'S REVELATION
The fans' comments on his tweet were varied, but on the whole supportive and accepting.
"Proud of you! Sorry you had to deal with the people trying to force you to say it before you were ready, but I'm so glad you were still able to do it on your own terms!"
"Ik what you're talking about and I accept you bro, everyone should tbh you coming out shouldn't change people's views about you cause at the end of the day you're still the same lil nas X we all know and love!"
"Unless you the one he might be (expletive), what the hell does it change???
The few who did object to Lil Nas' sexual orientation were few, and quickly put in their place by their indignant fellows.
LIVING AN AUTHENTIC LIFE
For Lil Nas X, coming out as gay is all about living an authentic life and being true to himself. At a moment in his life when he is finally gaining recognition for his music, it must have been galling to have to hide a part of himself away.
He is also aware that there will be repercussions for his act.
“I know the people who listen to [‘Old Town Road’] the most, and they’re not accepting of homosexuality," he said.
There are signs that he is wrong, since he came out in June, and 6 weeks later his song is still #1.
MAKING HISTORY FROM THE WORD "GO"
It will be interesting to see what Lil Nas X makes of his budding career since he has started by making history in his freshman year.
His song “Old Town Road” was named the longest-running No 1 song in history, dethroning Maria Carrey's "One Sweet Day."
"Old Town Road" has been in the top spot for 19 consecutive weeks, and it doesn't look as if it will be pushed off anytime soon.
Meanwhile, another one of Lil Nas X's singles, "Panini" is in the top 10 and working its way up.
Congratulations Lil Nas X, for your courage and for your music.
"OLD TOWN ROAD" REMIX WITH BILLY RAY CYRUS
Lil Nas X recorded a remix of "Old Town Road" with country legend Billy Ray Cyrus, and it has been met with critical acclaim, seamlessly blending country and rap.
The song has now been on top of the charts for a record 19 weeks and Lil Nas has signed with Columbia Records with his EP, "7", to be followed by his self-released project from 2018, "NASARATI."
The new project will feature Cardi B, Ryan Tedder, and, of course, the Billy Ray Cyrus remix of “Old Town Road.”
