NFL's Chris Smith's Girlfriend Petara Cordero Dies in Car Accident after Birth of Daughter Haven

Just when she had survived a car accident, another accident claimed the life of Chris Smith's girlfriend, Petara Cordero. She had just given birth to their first child a month ago.

took the life of Cleveland Browns defender Chris Smith’s girlfriend, Petara Cordero. After the couple survived a minor car accident, Cordero was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

On Wednesday morning, Smith was driving his Lamborghini along I-90 West in Cleveland with Cordero when his tire blew out, causing his vehicle to spin and hit a median. The couple did not obtain injuries from that accident.

However, as Cordero stepped out of the vehicle, an oncoming 2017 Mazda 3 struck her. She and the NFL player were standing on the north shoulder of I-90 westbound when she was hit, according to ABC5 News. She was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital.

According to police as reported by USA Today, the driver of the Mazda was a 47-year-old woman who admitted to have been drinking. No charges have been filed yet. Toxicology reports are still being accomplished.

In the wake of the accident, Cleveland Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam released a statement featured on the team’s website to extend their sympathies.

“Words cannot describe the sorrow we feel for Chris following the loss of his girlfriend, Petara,” they wrote. “Our entire organization mourns with Chris, his family and the Cordero family. We will do everything possible to offer them our support, comfort and any resources in this most difficult time.”

Smith’s team players were notified of the accident on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Coach Freddie Kitchens checked in on the 27-year-old that same day.

No doubt Smith is devastated by the accident especially since only a month ago, he and Cordero welcomed their first child together, daughter Haven Harris Smith. During her birth, Smith even sat out the exhibition game with Indianapolis.

He also shared photos of his new baby being cradled by Cordero and gushed over the blessing.

“I’m so thankful to have another beautiful gift in this world my daughter Haven Harris Smith. You are such a blessing to me and your mother!! Love you Petara and Baby Haven”

Days before she died, Cordero, 26, expressed her love for Smith in her what became her final post.

“This a forever thing, I love you through everything,” she wrote to caption a lovely photo of Smith kissing her forehead.

We can only hope that Smith will find comfort during this sad time. According to the Cleveland Browns website, he has his team’s full support as he grieves and will be excused from any activities as long as he pleases. Counselors will also be made available for players and staff throughout the week.
