NBA Legend Magic Johnson & Cookie Celebrate 28 Years of Marriage after a Joint 60th Birthday Bash
Magic and Cookie Johnson exchanged special tributes to mark their 28th anniversary. See how the couple celebrated the milestone in photos the former NBA star shared.
28 years ago, Magic Johnson and his wife Cookie vowed to spend the rest of their lives together. That vow remains unbroken as they recently expressed their sweetest sentiments in celebrating their close-to-three decades of marriage.
CELEBRATING 28 YEARS OF LOVE
Magic and Cookie each took to their Instagram to share to the world the kind of love they have for each other. For the former NBA star, marrying cookie “was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” And for his wife, theirs is an “undying love that is hard to describe but is uniquely ours.”
The milestone pair who both turned 60 this year had nothing but kind words for each other in their special tributes.
“The job you’ve done as a mother, and now a grandmother, has been an honor to witness and I am so proud to call you my wife,” the former Los Angeles Lakers point guard shared.
“…you are the ultimate romantic, you always manage to surprise me and keep me on my toes, I couldn’t ask for anything more."
In a separate post, Magic also gushed about Cookie’s ageless appearance.
“Baby, I must say, you look as stunning today as you did when I met you at 18.”
Meanwhile, Cookie shined a light on how romantic her husband is.
“…you are the ultimate romantic, you always manage to surprise me and keep me on my toes, I couldn’t ask for anything more,” she wrote.
Earlier this month, the formidable couple jointly celebrated their 60th birthdays with a lavish affair in St. Tropez.
Magic and Cookie celebrated their milestone by having dinner with some friends. A photo shared by the father-of-three (two with Cookie and one from a previous relationship) showed them dining at Tao Restaurant with their friends, actress Holly Robinson-Peete and her husband, Rodney Peete, and couple Tonya and Dave Winfield.
TURNING 60 TOGETHER
Earlier this month, the formidable couple jointly celebrated their 60th birthdays with a lavish affair in St. Tropez. The weekend-long celebration had a star-studded guest list that included Jennifer Lopez, Angela Bassett, Spike Lee, Chris Tucker, Courtney B. Vance, Boris Kodjoe, and many more.
Guests were treated to a poolside party at Nikki beach on the first day and a club event on the second day.
“I’ve never felt angry at him, because it wasn’t like he knew anything, it wasn’t like it happened while we were married. I was just scared for both of us. And I dealt with it, and still deal with it, spiritually.”
SURVIVING THE UPS AND DOWNS
There is plenty of reason for this couple to be celebrating not just their birthdays but most especially their 28-year-marriage. It has survived many ups and downs, as Cookie admitted to Black Doctor on their 25th anniversary.
“We had a period where we were about to separate,” she confessed. "There was a point where I was home all the time; he was working. Sometimes you start growing apart a little because he’s seeing new adventurous stuff. He’s out in the world. He’s growing. [But] I’m stagnant.”
Their biggest trial was in 1991 when Magic discovered he was HIV positive. That same week Cookie found out she was pregnant with their first child. Luckily, she and their son, EJ Johnson who's openly gay, tested negative.
In spite of this scare, Cookie admitted she never harbored any anger towards her husband.
“I’ve never felt angry at him, because it wasn’t like he knew anything, it wasn’t like it happened while we were married. I was just scared for both of us. And I dealt with it, and still deal with it, spiritually.”
Today, the couple have nothing but gratefulness for the life they share. Both are looking forward to spending many more years together and it’s easy to see that they will.
