Inside 'Dallas Buyers Club' Actor Matthew McConaughey & Wife Camila Alves’ Inspiring Love Story
Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves have turned out to be one of the dearest couples in the entertainment industry since 2012.
McConaughey and Alves met in 2006 and became engaged in 2011. The couple tied the knot a year later. They were blessed with three children — Levi, Vida, and Livingston.
"That night I spoke 25 minutes of the best Spanish I've ever spoken in my life."
In an interview on Howard Stern's SiriusXM radio show, McConaughey, who played Ron Woodroof in the 2013 biographical drama "Dallas Buyers Club," remembered that time Alves rejected him at the beginning of their relationship, as reported by US Weekly.
According to the actor, the Brazilian-American model played hard to get when he initially met her in 2006 at a nightclub in Los Angeles. McConaughey was already famous at the time.
"So I'm healthily single at a club on Sunset [Boulevard]," he explained. "I'm not even a club guy, but I was a club guy.
"And I'm making margaritas at the end of the table, and this figure moves across the room. And I remember [saying] to myself, 'What is that?' I didn't say, 'Who is that,' I said, 'What is that?'"
McConaughey added that he can't get his eyes off Alves and that he's waving, attempting to stand out enough to be noticed. He then approached her and introduced himself.
"And I go, 'Would you and your friends like to come over and have a drink?' She came by herself. Now we sit down, music's playing. I make a margarita," he continued.
"That night I spoke 25 minutes of the best Spanish I've ever spoken in my life. She spoke Portuguese. I don't think I ever understood Portuguese as well as I did that night. I was focused. It worked."
Sparks were flying, said McConaughey. So he decided to ask as to whether she might want to return to his house after leaving the nightclub.
"So we go back to the house and continue the party for a while to extend the time. I'm trying to extend the time," he said.
However, when the brunette beauty wanted to leave, McConaughey told her she should sleepover in one of his extra rooms.
"And now she's like, 'OK, I'm gonna go. I'm gonna get a cab.' And I'm like, 'Don't do that. It's way too late,'" he said. "Take the guest bedroom.'"
Although Alves agreed, McConaughey said that she turned down his advances when he attempted to sneak down into the guest bedroom.
McConaughey woke up the following morning to find the model having breakfast with his peers and housekeeper.
McConaughey asked Alves out on a date later that day, but she denied him. After two additional attempts, she eventually gave in. Alves agreed to come over to his house, where he cooked for her.
That's when their sweet relationship began. In June 2012, the couple got married in a private Catholic ceremony in Austin, Texas.
In an interview with PEOPLE, McConaughey said:
"We decided to embrace the ritual of marriage as an opportunity and adventure we'll take together."
According to O, The Oprah Magazine, the key to their relationship success is very basic — they prioritize it.
