to my Triple J, “John Junior Jovanovic” as you call yourself. 4 years ago today I had one baby and no idea that that did not in fact make me any kind of expert in parenting — only in how to parent the one that I had. In a few short hours, I would wake your sister up and take her to get a chocolate croissant with daddy to commemorate her last meal as our only baby and to soak up that ritual together that I knew would never be the same. your birth was fast and slow, you kept us guessing. and then you arrived, all giant, observing eyes and quiet wonder at the world around you. I had no idea what you would need from me as your mother — even changing a boy diaper meant learning a whole new skill set from the one I had honed. and you were patient. and then I was patient. and slowly you and I learned each other. you have always been ferociously you, and that is challenging and wonderful. your persistence, your desire for details, your focus and drive, your delight, your constant willingness to say yes and go and love so wholly with open arms and heart and still those giant, heartbreaking eyes are what will always make me and daddy so proud of you. I am so excited for all that 4 will bring with it for you, for me and for us. I love you, my baby boy. ❤️
