Stephen Colbert Has Been with His Wife Evelyn for 26 Years and It All Started with an Invite from His Mom

Stephen Colbert and his wife Evelyn McGee-Colbert, have been together for 26 years. The couple met when Stephen was invited by his mother to a festival.

In 2016, during one of Stephen's pre-"Late Show" audience Q&As, the famous talk show host was asked how he knew Evelyn was the one.

He then went into detail about his story, which includes a series of random events that all prompted the couple getting married in 1993, as shown in the video posted on Facebook.

Stephen explained that everything began with an ex-girlfriend he was with at the time. His ex really wanted to get married, yet he was not very sure about it.

At some point, Stephen decided to travel to his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina, because he wanted to sort out his feelings.

Stephen immediately told his mother about the situation, and with her help, he realized that he was not yet ready to get married.

While he was still in Charleston, his mother asked him to accompany her to the Spoleto Festival since his sister would not like to come.

Stephen agreed, and he didn't expect that he would meet his future wife at the festival. He described Evelyn as a pretty woman in a black linen dress.

The couple now have three children — Madeleine, Peter, and John.

In those moments, Stephen, who delivers funny lines of dialogue with complete seriousness and sincerity, also said to himself:

"There's your wife. You're gonna marry her."

Both of them spent time eyeing toward one another across the room. Stephen was unquestionably intrigued by Evelyn, so he talked to her.

"We realized we had grown up with each other, but hadn't gone to the same school," Stephen said. "She'd gone to the all-girls school and I'd gone to, essentially, the all-boys school."

Stephen and Evelyn began dating after their encounter at the Spoleto Festival. They tied the knot in October 1993 and built a family together.

The couple now have three children — Madeleine, Peter, and John. Evelyn is an actress, known for "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," and "Strangers with Candy."

Meanwhile, most of the shows Stephen has been a part of are on Comedy Central, including "Exit 57," "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah," and "The Colbert Report."
