Nickolas, who formed the iconic singing duo "Ashford & Simpson" alongside his wife, passed away in August 2011 after suffering from throat cancer.
Speaking about how she copes with her husband's death, Valerie explained that she was surrounded by family and friends who helped her whenever she was feeling down. She also added:
"It's something I didn't expect – to be in this position. Nothing prepares you for it. It's a hard thing to go through."
As music partners, Ashford and Simpson performed and produced some of the hit songs of their time. The duo also wrote several songs for a list of artists, which include Marvin Gaye, Tammi Tarrell, and Diana Ross.
In 1963, Ashford became drawn to songwriting after meeting Simpson, who was then a music student at the White Rock Baptist Church in Harlem.
The legendary singer often attributed their religious background as a standing influence on their music. He said: "So much soul comes out of the Baptist church, it's so embedded in you."
