Although Lauryn Hill has become known for her singing and songwriting abilities, she recently made headlines for a different reason.

Her 21-year-old daughter, Selah Louise Marley alleged that the singer-songwriter beat her when she was younger.

Barely a week later, Hill used a lengthy and detailed statement as a response to her daughter’s allegation. While noting that Selah “has every right to express herself,” the Grammy award-winner said:

“She also got the discipline that black children get because we are held to a different standard.”

The call-out [by Selah on her parents] quickly prompted [her father] Rohan to apologize publicly to Selah.

Hill added that her feelings towards how the public treated her affected her motherhood experience. She took things even further by recalling how angry she was as a child and how her mother used to discipline her with a belt.

The “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” crooner ended her statement by posing a thought-provoking question to her followers. Her response not only got over 13,000 likes, but it also caused a divide in opinions in the comment section. While some people felt that she shouldn’t have to explain herself, others told her to own up to her abusive ways.

It would be recalled that the drama began after Selah explained that Hill was “very, very angry. So so so angry. She was unapproachable, not easy to talk to.”

Selah added that her famous mother’s anger led her to start living with her "grandparents half the time.” Things became even worse when Hill wanted to discipline young Selah.

The singer-songwriter would tell Selah to get the belt, and that action usually felt like she [Selah] was walking towards her death. The model also called out her father, Rohan Marley, for not being there during her childhood.

The call-out quickly prompted Rohan to apologize publicly to Selah. In the apology, the entrepreneur and former gridiron football player expressed his love for his daughter and added that he was open to righting his wrongs.

Selah has since defended her parents amid the backlash they received from the public. The model claimed that she was disappointed that her search for healing and words got twisted by the public. Despite all the drama, Selah and Rohan are determined to work on their relationship as daughter and father.
