Gabrielle Union's Cousin, Saweetie Didn't Want to Ask for Help to Make It in the Industry

Gabrielle Union's cousin Saweetie is making waves in the music industry, but she did not want to ask for help to make it in the industry. Here's what she had to say.

Making it in the entertainment industry is extremely difficult and most people would use whatever connections they have to help themselves.

However, for Saweetie, using her family connections was not something that she was willing to do, choosing instead to try and do it by her self.

Recently, Saweetie has been making some waves in the music industry after she released her song "Tap In." But did you know she is related to actress Gabrielle Union? Her grandfather is also San Fransisco 49ers linebacker, Willie Harper.

During an episode of "Desus & Mero," the star revealed that her family did not even know she was a musician. However, her pride meant that she wanted to be self-made. She said:

"I appreciated that they reached out and was like, ‘We see what you’re doing. Our friends keep talking about you.' So I appreciate the support, but for me, I’ve always been self-motivated. "

After the release of her music, news that she was cousins with Union came out. The pair regularly hangs out with Saweetie performing at the actress' birthday.

Those aren't the only famous people in her family tree after she revealed that she grew up with MC Hammer who is her uncle.

Since breaking into the industry, Saweetie started dating rapper Quavo who revealed that their relationship had a bumpy start after meeting on Instagram.

The Migos rapper revealed that he made the first move and after months of talking on the phone, she flew to Atlanta for their first date where he almost chocked on a crab cake. She said:

"I'm still getting to know him, so I feel awkward because he's, like, chocking at the table."

Saweetie first became known after her freestyle of the 2002 song "My Neck, My Back" went viral. She became a star to watch after the release of the music video for "ICY GRL."

In 2018, she signed onto Warner Bros with Artistry Records, revealing that she had fallen in love with their passionate energy.

Last year, the star turned 26 and had quickly become a hit on the red carpet where she often takes style risks that land her on the best-dressed list.

One of those instances was during the 3rd annual Wearable Art Gala where she wore a stunning lace blue RC Caylan Atelier gown.
