Elliot Gould recently sat for an interview with Closer Weekly, during which the actor candidly opened up about his eight-year marriage to music icon Barbra Streisand.
In a recent interview with Closer Weekly, legendary actor Elliot Gould opened up about how he met Barbra Streisand, their eight-year marriage, and the aftermath of their divorce.
Gould and Streisand met in 1962 when she auditioned for the role of Miss Marmelstein in the broadway musical "I Can Get It For You Wholesale." At the time, she was only 19.
Streisand sang three songs, after which she gave out her number to people who watched the audition. Gould, who was also in the audience, admitted that he later called her.
That phone call was the start of a friendship between Gould and Streisand. They later fell in love and started a romantic relationship.
Streisand's appearance in "I Can Get It For You Wholesale" shot her into the spotlight. For her role in the Broadway show, she received a Tony nomination and a New York Drama Critics award.
Still riding on the fame from "Wholesale," Streisand branched into music and was soon signed by Columbia Records. In 1963,she released
her debut album "The Barbra Streisand Album," which bagged two Grammy Awards.
As Streisand tried to grasp her newfound fame, her relationship with Gould blossomed, and by September 1963, they got married in a secret ceremony.
While Streisand and Gould might have indeed had something special, this did not stop her from giving love a second chance.
Three years later, the couple welcomed their first and only son together, Jason Gould, on December 23, 1966. However, this was not enough to keep them together as Streisand's career began to outshine her husband's.
The couple soon fell apart, and by 1971, they got divorced. Despite their split, Gould believes that he and Streisand had a great life together and that they had something special.
Today, the former couple maintains an amicable co-parenting relationship, with Gould once admitting that he would always consider Streisand his family.
While Streisand and Gould might have indeed had something special, this did not stop her from giving love a second chance, which seems to be going well for the singer.
In July 1998, Streisand tied the knot with actor James Brolin and the two have enjoyed over two decades of marital bliss ever since.
Streisand's marriage to Gould might not have worked out, but it appears the singer finally got her happily ever after fairytale with Brolin, whom she so dearly loves.
