Tyson, a New York native, started her showbiz career after she quit her typist job and forayed into modeling. Soon enough, she moved to Hollywood and in 1963, she became the first African-American to appear in a TV drama.

Despite making it big and creating pivotal feats in the movie industry, Tyson faced some hitches in Hollywood. This was due to her refusal to portray roles she considered as blaxploitation.

With time, her policy paved more ways for her and also created an impact among other African-American stars. Happy birthday Cicely Tyson!
