Media powerhouse Larry Flynt has passed away at the age of 78. According to TMZ, who first broke the news, the famous publisher died at Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles on Wednesday morning from heart failure.
Flynt was famous for being the founder of the disruptive adult entertainment magazine “Hustler,” which he created in 1974. The media mogul fought various legal issues, including his First Amendment rights to publish lewd content.
According to the deceased’s nephew, Jimmy Flynt Jr, the publisher had been battling various health issues and was declining over the past few years. Speaking to ABC News, Jimmy said:
“He suffered decades of health issues, and you can imagine it was pretty difficult. I loved him, and may he rest in peace.”
After the first “Hustler” magazine was published, Flynt rose to fame and soon expanded his empire to include a casino, a porn site, strip clubs, and several other magazines, including one titled “Barely Legal.”
As at the time of his death, Flynt was estimated to have a net worth of over $100 million.
However, many religious organizations and feminist groups didn’t appreciate his content and slammed him with legal petitions, accusing him of demeaning women. Flynt objected, declaring him as not just a pornstar but an advocate for free speech.
Many of his legal trials were detailed in the 1996 movie “The People Vs. Larry Flynt,” which starred Woody Harrelson. As a result of his immense popularity, Flynt became a visible target and was shot in 1978 while heading into court.
The fatal incident left him paralyzed and stuck in a wheelchair for life. However, that didn’t stop the prominent publisher from pushing on. He dabbled into politics years after the incident, running for offices.
In 1984, he campaigned for President and in 2003 ran for Governor of California but lost to actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger. As at the time of his death, Flynt was estimated to have a net worth of over $100 million.
He also had 30 Hustler Hollywood retail stores and several video-on-demand enterprises all over the world. Away from his career, the 78-year-old was married five times and welcomed five daughters and one son.
