Many viewers expressed their anger and displeasure at the depressing storyline and the deaths of other female characters on the CBS show. This angry viewer tagged the show and partly wrote:
"Palmer's wife passes away? Y'all really have to stop killing off the wives & women on this show!..."
The fan suggested that the show's creators should consider killing the villains. Others, however, praised Jimmy's positivity amid the pain of his wife's death. They lauded the show for retaining his "happy go lucky personality."
Dietzen, who plays Jimmy, revealed in an interview that he was told that the character would lose his wife beforehand.
According to reports, episode 7 of the series fast-forwarded in time to the pandemic, focusing on Jimmy's loss. While chatting with the team members, he told them that his mom moved in after Breena's death. In his words:
"You guys were so great, when, you know... I lost Breena," he said. "But between work, single parenting, school, it just got to be too much."
The couple met through work after his fling with Agent Michelle Lee. Breena was a mortician at the hospital. The duo tied the knot in May 2012 when the team got threatened by terrorists and welcomed their daughter, Victoria, last season.
Dietzen revealed in an interview that he was told that the character would lose his wife beforehand. He said that the writers believed that the wife of the most optimistic team member passing away would be fantastic storytelling.
He also noted that he informed the producers and writers not to do away with Jimmy's optimism because he suffered a loss. Amid his pain, the NCIS team has showered support on Jimmy, keeping a close eye on him as he grieves.
