TRUE STORY

Pérez-Reverte revealed that he was inspired to write "Queen of the South" by Mexican drug ballads, known as narcocorridos which he heard about the real-life drug trafficker Sandra Ávila Beltrán.

Beltrán was the first woman to ever become Cartel boss and like Teresa, she entered the "business" through a love affair. Like Teresa, Beltrán was beautiful and used the proceed from her drug-running to finance an extravagant lifestyle.

Beltrán survived in a world where life-spans are notoriously short and spent seven years in a US prison after federal agents captured a 9-tons shipment of cocaine.

Today, Beltrán is free, but how the fictional Teresa Mendoza will end up is what season five promises to disclose. At the end of season four, Teresa was making deals with the Russian mob and preparing to take over New York.
