King's death occurred as she was leaving a party with her buddies. At first, she wanted to call an Uber but was persuaded by a friend to join them. The teenagers all rode a car that later came under attack.

An unidentified person shot the vehicle that carried the 16-year-old. Her mom believes that she was not the intended target but was only a victim who sustained a gunshot wound.

Authorities confirmed that she was among the victims of two unrelated senseless killings. King was a student of Evans High School. She had impressive grades, a lively personality, and had a dream of becoming a veterinarian.

She was also close to her mom and younger siblings. Students of Evans High School observed a moment of silence a few hours after the tragedy. A few family and friends also held a vigil on Monday at the spot of the incident.
