Newport News Police Chief Steven Drew gave briefings on a recent killing that happened in the city. It involved the death of an infant child and traumatic injuries on an 8-year-old.

Drew explained that the perpetrator was the children's mother, 35-year-old Sarah Whitney Ganoe, who was engaged to the father of her toddler.

The emergency service received a hysterical call from a man who was later confirmed to be Ganoe's lover. The caller talked about a message he received from the mother explaining the scene he would find when he arrived at the house.

The authorities wasted no time making an entry into the apartment in the 300 block of Hilltop Drive, north of Oakland Industrial Park. Despite the years of experience investigating crime scenes, the police head confessed that it was a gory sight.

He used the words "horrific scene," to describe it. Inside the house, they found the dead body of a 10-month-old named Zell Howard. He had been stabbed to death in a bedroom.

The Police Chief refused to expound on the details of the interrogation.

Another child, an 8-year-old girl, was found in a terrible condition—with stab wounds all over her body. Without hesitation, the child was checked into a children's hospital in Norfolk.

There were no other kids at the crime scene. Officers found a 2.5 inch-long pocket knife and Ganoe, who had sustained some superficial wounds.

She was taken to the hospital for treatment before appearing at the police headquarters, where they interrogated the suspect. The Police Chief refused to expound on the details of the interrogation.

Still, he maintained that the Virginia mother had been charged with one count each of second-degree murder and malicious wounding, two counts apiece of felony child abuse, and using a knife in a felony.

The case is still under investigation, and Drew assured the public that his officers, including the forensics, have given their best to the case from day one. He also applauded the initial dispatcher who revived the disturbing call from Ganoe's fiancé for her composure.

Residents around the area have been asked a few questions, and most of them revealed that there was nothing odd about the family all through their stay.
