Fans Share Mixed Reactions on Dutton Family’s Story to Be Told in 'Yellowstone' Prequel '1883' Starring Sam Elliott
Fans of the Paramount+ and MTV Entertainment Studios' signature drama “Yellowstone” haven’t been holding back online recently. The network’s announced the cast for the prequel “1883,” and there are mixed reactions.
The Dutton family has kept audiences glued to their TV screens for three seasons and even racked up over 5 million viewers for the season 3 finale. Given the events from the finale, fans have been looking forward to updates.
Thankfully, producers have revealed that fans can expect season 4 to air sometime in the fall. However, their announcement of a prequel for the show is what has truly captured the “Yellowstone” fan base’s attention.

The “Yellowstone” prequel, “1883,” follows the Dutton family as they make a journey out West to seek a better future for themselves. “Yellowstone” fans have been aware of the spinoff for a while, but details only reached the public recently.
Like many other productions, the cast for “1883” was revealed to create more of the conversation around the series. As soon as fans of the upcoming shows’ predecessor heard the news, they let their varying opinions loose online.
Husband and wife duo Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are the actors who will portray James and Margaret Dutton. Another star to expect in the “1883” cast is the highly decorated actor, Sam Elliot.
As mentioned before, fans did not feel the need to restrict their opinions on the casting for the upcoming series. Many of them were particularly concerned with the addition of country musicians Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.
While many of the commenters relayed their reservations about the singer’s involvement in the series, not all the reactions were skeptical. Some praised the casting choices and even prematurely credited them for the show’s success.
Although there were some negative reactions to Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s casting news, the opposite happened regarding Sam Elliot. It seems that the 76-year-old “The Ranch” actor has earned the respect of most audiences by now.
McGraw and Hill used their own social media accounts to confirm their parts despite the mixed reaction to the upcoming casting news. It is clear from both their tweets that the couple is thrilled to explore a new chapter.
McGraw shared his news through a 41-second video that explains the new show’s plot, creating hype for anticipating audiences. On the other hand, Hill shared a clip of herself holding her script, revealing her excitement for the project.
As much as there was a mixed reaction to “1883’s” cast rundown, the show is still likely to succeed once it airs. The same has been observed with other TV series that have gained a cult following and moved onto spin-offs.
Additionally, the anticipation around “Yellowstone” season four is a slight indication of what to expect for “1883.” Fans cannot wait to see what is next for the Dutton family since the last shocking finale.
Thankfully, Paramount+ proves that the series will be worth the wait for fans in their recent teaser. Actor Jefferson White even claimed that the show’s fourth season was the best one yet and called its premiere episode his favorite ever.
Although there is plenty of anticipation around the fourth season, some fans may be dreading it since it could mean the show is drawing to a close. Fortunately, there is confirmation that the upcoming season will not be the last.
Show creator Taylor Sheridan has hinted that he knows how the show ends already, keeping fans with their fingers crossed that it isn’t too soon. But, by the looks of things, the show will at least have another season.
