Smith admits that she does not know how she contracted the virus and did not think it was COVID she was dealing with. She shared:
“At first, I thought it was a chest infection, but I kept throwing up, and after a call to 111, they said go into a hospital. They did a test there and found out it was covid and admitted me.”
Smith did well at a ward with oxygen to help her breathe for four days, but suddenly, her body started responding negatively to the infection.

“All I remember after that is waking up, and the doctor saying, ‘Come with us now, or you are going to die,’” she shared. I don’t remember anything after that.”
Smith was placed in the intensive care unit and relied on a ventilator to live. While in a coma, doctors called her family and asked them to prepare for the worst.
On the fourth day, medical staff called her mom and put the phone on speaker, hoping Smith would recognize the voice and wake up.
