Mom of 8 Finds Condemnatory Note from Teacher about Her Kid's Lunch, Sparks Debate among Parents
A mother was shocked by a note she received from her child's teacher. It indicated that the mom was not feeding her child a healthy-enough school lunch. The letter went viral.
School teachers often contact parents to let them know how their kids are doing at school. In 2017, one educator decided to comment on a mother of eight's choice of school lunch.
Her three-year-old's teacher was not impressed with the food given for lunch and made her feelings known. When the mother opened her child's lunch bag, she was surprised to find a note.

THE MOTHER FELT CRITICIZED
The words in the note indicated that because the child had a chocolate slice, they were eating something from the "Red Food category." It went on to ask the parent to pick a different, healthier option. The mother was in disbelief and felt criticized.
A friend of the mom, writer, Melinda Tankard Reist, shared the note online. The friend also included a caption to the post. It read: My friend (mother of 8 healthy children) received this today from her 3-year old's kindy."
GAVE HER ADVICE
Tankard Reist offered the mother some advice. She stated the mom should send her child to school with "two slices tomorrow and tell them to get lost." The irony of the situation is that the mother held a health-science-related degree.
Tankard Reist stated that her friend regularly gave her kids healthy and fresh food. However, this did not meet the standards of the school teacher and her food traffic light system.

THE TRAFFIC LIGHT FOOD SYSTEM
The system puts forward that green is for healthy foods, amber for meals to be eaten in moderation, and red is reserved for unhealthy food. With close to three thousand likes and countless shares, this note started an online debate.
Many netizens were outraged by the teacher's actions and shared what they would've done in the situation. One user said: "I'd write a note to the teacher - I'm responsible for feeding my child... you're responsible for educating him/her."

THE ONLINE REACTION
Others pointed out that the teacher's food system was flawed. A commenter wrote: "I believe it is about teaching our children size and portion control and not denying sweets completely."
The online conversation was not one-sided, and some raised points in defense of the teacher. A user said: "We have to conform to certain regulations regarding what food children are served while attending the service."

SIMILAR EXPERIENCES
In 2021, another mother was fuming after a teacher told her how to pack her son's lunchbox. He suffers from autism and SPD, and his mom packs him specific treats. However, his teacher criticized it and said it included "too many dry biscuit options."
It seems these instances are common because two years ago, a third mother was also appalled when her daughter's teacher commented negatively regarding her lunch.
None of the parents were pleased by the meddling, and based on the online reactions, many believe teachers should stick to teaching.
