A chance meeting on a tropical island led to a long and happy marriage for one couple. However, they never knew just how deep their connection was—until 2018.

Their story seemed like it was straight out of a movie. Liane, 25, and Marc, 27, met in the Bahamas, and while he was initially interested in her college roommate, that changed on the flight home.

Liane and Marc had an intense conversation that set the rest of their lives on a new trajectory. When Liane got off the plane at JFK, she knew Marc was the type of man she could spend the rest of her life with.

THE COUPLE TOOK A DNA TEST

She shared: "By the time we landed at JFK, I had an unbidden thought. I could marry a guy like this." Two weeks later they were planning a wedding. While their friends and family thought they were crazy, they followed their hearts.

The Carters had a once-in-a-lifetime connection, a wonderful marriage, and two sons who made them proud. After thirty-eight years of matrimony, their story took a surprising turn.

THEY WERE RELATED

Their eldest son, Jonathan, wanted to fill in their family tree and pressed them to take a 23andMe ancestry DNA test. When the results came, Liane and Marc could not stop laughing.

The tests revealed that the couple was related—they were third cousins! The news caught them off-guard and did not sit well with their son at first. He was shocked and asked them if he needed genetic counseling.

THEIR "FORBIDDEN LOVE"

Despite this, the couple found their familial connection hilarious and shared the story online. Liane said: "I shared my news on Facebook, with the hashtag #OurForbiddenLove."

She added: "Sixty-three people quickly clicked the Like, Love, or LOL emojis, followed by a chorus of 'Get out!' and 'No freakin' way!' and 'How is that possible?'"

IT DID NOT CHANGE ANYTHING

Friends also commented that it made sense since Liane and Marc were always like two bodies with one mind. Their deep connection allowed for months of cousin jokes and fun. While it came as a surprise, the discovery did not change much.

Liane expressed: "But nothing could ever change the way I feel about Marc. Together, we've raised two amazing young men who we are so incredibly proud of. For us, family always comes first!"

ANOTHER COUPLE FOUND OUT THEY WERE RELATED

Home DNA tests can reveal some unexpected findings, which has been the case for many people. Two celebrities also discovered they were ninth cousins once removed when they participated in the show "Finding Your Roots."

Kevin Bacon and his wife, Kyra Sedgwick, were shocked when they heard the news. Sedgwick found it unsettling, and Bacon was not happy about it either. Despite this, the couple has had one of Hollywood's longest and happiest marriages.

Like Bacon and Sedgwick, Liane and Marc did not let a test result affect the success of their marriage—it seems to have brought them even closer together.
