They had pushed back the release of the second installation of the Avatar movie eight times. Despite the initial release date being December 2014, Cameron said:

"I wouldn't call them delays. It was highly optimistic that we could start quickly until scripts are written. If there's no scripts, there's nothing, right?"

There were delays in filming in 2016, pushing the filming to 2017 with a December 2020 release. They then moved the release to December 2021, and now the latest release date falls on December 16, 2022.

AVATAR 2 CAST: WHO'S BACK IN "AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER"

Because the core cast of the original movie was all on contract, the major stars will be back in December 2022 when the sequel lands in the cinemas.

Zoe Saldana will reprise her role as Neytiri, Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, and Stephen Lang as the dead Colonel Miles Quaritch, whom Cameron says will be back from the dead.

Also back is Sigourney Weaver as a new character, Kate Winslet as Ronal, Matt Gerald as Corporal Lyle Wainfleet, and Carol Christine Hilaria Pounder as Mo'at, among other new additions.

AVATAR 2 PLOT: WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN "AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER"

Like the rest of the future Avatar sequels, the story of "Avatar: The Way of Water" focuses majorly on Sully and his newfound family, whom he now lives with on Pandora.

The sequel's story is set more than a decade after the events of the initial movie. The story is about the Sully family, their troubles, their battles to stay alive, how far they would go to keep each other safe, and the tragedies they must endure.

The family journeys beyond the forests of Pandora as the movie was filmed underwater and in volcanic environments. Cameron wants to prove to fans that the wait was worthwhile.

"AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER" TRAILER DEBUTS ONLINE

The trailer for "Avatar: The Way of Water," which dropped on May 9, 2022, revealed beautiful imagery without revealing the movie's storyline.

Worthington's Sully, and Saldana's Neytiri, have Na'vi children they must shield in the trailer. In addition, the couple seemed to protect a human child even as humans come back to disturb their peace.

Despite the invasion, Sully remains a believer in the family unit as he said:

"I know one thing. Wherever we go, this family is our fortress."

The trailer further shows that the Na'vi have to defend their homes again while also spotlighting the new generation.
