‘Avatar 2’ Debuts Its Trailer - When Is the New James Cameron Movie Coming Out?
"Avatar: The Way of the Water" is set to premiere this year, 13 years after its first installment, "Avatar," hit the theaters. The sequel will have several original cast members and new stars, including Kate Winslet, who last collaborated with James Cameron in "Titanic."
When "Avatar" first hit the cinemas in 2009, fans marveled at the cinematography and special effects of the movie. "Avatar" became the highest-grossing film in history, with fans anticipating a part two.
Now, 13 years and eight delays later, the 20th Century Studio film's sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water," released its trailer and is set to premiere on December 16, 2022.
The film was going to hit theaters in December 2021, but with the ongoing pandemic, among other factors, showrunners had to move its premiere.
The sequel will showcase several original cast members, such as Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver.
WHY WAS "AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER" DELAYED?
Initially, "Avatar: The Way of Water" was scheduled for release in December 2014, followed by its prequel a year after. After several delays at that time, the movie was set to start filming in April 2016 to be released by December that year.
However, when the time came, it still didn't push through. Filming was pushed to August 2017, although it began the month after. Filmmaker James Cameron blamed the "very involved" writing process for the setback.
In January 2017, news about "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" being moved from May to December came out. It was presumed that the "Avatar 2's" release was delayed yet again as it ran scared of competition.
Another set date was December 2020, until Disney moved it again to December 2021. When the pandemic happened, it meant yet another delay for the movie's release.
Some sources also said that Cameron held off production while waiting for another underwater CGI to be developed. Despite several delays, Cameron remained optimistic about the film's outcome, saying:
“It was a seven-year gap between 'The Terminator' and 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day,' seven-year gap between 'Alien' and 'Aliens.'”
WHEN IS "AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER" COMING OUT?
The film's 3D trailer debuted alongside "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness." It was shown at CinemaCon on April 27, 2022, and released on May 9. Cameron said during the event, as reported by Digital Spy:
“[I was] hard at work putting the final touches on the film.”
The movie's final release date is on December 16, 2022, in the U.S. Meanwhile, Disney finally made "Avatar” available online.
