Why Have Shakira and Gerard Piqué Not Married? A Look at the Couple’s Love Story

Spanish football star Gerard Piqué and Columbian pop star Shakira, one of the world's most famous celebrity couples, are allegedly going through a relationship crisis.

According to the Spanish news website El Periodico, Piqué has been living alone in his Muntaner bachelor house in Barcelona and enjoying the city's nightlife with his friends.

Reported sightings of Piqué in his hometown came after El Periodico journalists Laura Fa and Lorena Vázquez revealed that the athlete allegedly cheated on Shakira. The Latin singer allegedly caught Piqué with another woman.

The truth about the couple's alleged split and Piqué's alleged cheating remains unclear because neither Shakira nor the football pro has addressed these circulating reports.

Piqué and the "Hips Don't Lie" hitmaker have been together for over a decade. The couple met on the set of Shakira's music video for "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa), an anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem.

The pair, who began dating in 2011, previously went through relationship dramas. They briefly split and later rekindled their relationship. Shakira and Piqué went official on Instagram, where she described him as her "sunshine."

Fans assumed Shakira and Piqué were already married, but the longtime couple has yet to consider tying the knot. But in a 2014 Glamour interview, Shakira shared her thoughts on marriage:

"We have a union, a love for each other, and a baby. I think that those aspects of our relationship are already established, and marriage is not going to change them. But if I'm ever going to get married, he's the one."

Shakira and Piqué join the list of longtime Hollywood couples who have not exchanged wedding vows. Actor Jason Statham and Rose Huntington-Whiteley, as well as Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes, are notable couples that have yet to marry.

Shakira's thoughts on marriage have remained consistent through the years. In an interview with "60 Minutes" in 2020, the "Loca" singer revealed that the idea of tying the knot scared her. She said:

"To tell you the truth, marriage scares me. I don't want him to see me as the wife. I'd rather him see me as his girlfriend."

Shakira added that she wanted to remain Piqué's girlfriend. Although Shakira prefers to be Piqué's girlfriend than his wife, she previously called the 35-year-old football star her "husband" on her social media accounts.

Shakira and Piqué share two adorable sons - Milan, nine, and seven-year-old Sasha. The longtime couple welcomed Milan in 2013 and their second boy in 2015.

Both Milan and Sasha have developed an interest in music and sports. Besides supporting and joining their mom's public appearances and at the recording studio, the kids have been actively playing soccer, tennis, and basketball.

Piqué and Shakira's greatest source of joy has been their children. Piqué stated that they love their children deeply, while Shakira said their kids have completed her life.

Shakira added that she has learned a lot from Sasha and Milan and that everything she does now is for her children. She called her relationship with her kids a "new dimension of love."
