Before she made the announcement, there were rumors around December 2019 that the Australian rapper was pregnant, but neither she nor Carti confirmed. Instead, she posted a picture of herself in a red bikini to shut down the rumors.

Despite never mentioning the exact birth date of her son, Onyx could have been born around April or May 2020, as she celebrated his second birthday in early May 2022.

For his 2nd birthday, Onyx had a dinosaur-themed party which included a pool with his name spelled over it, a balloon artist, dinosaur masks, a bounce house and slide, a dinosaur piñata, and more.

According to fans, Azalea named her son Onyx because it is a gemstone that correlates with her real name 'Amethyst.' At first, she shared many photos of her son, and she was delighted, but in 2021, she stopped. In a tweet, she said:
