VERA FARMIGA'S SIBLING TAISSA FARMIGA AND THEIR PARENTS
Vera and Taissa are sisters and famous actresses who share a strong resemblance despite the 21-year-age difference. The stars were born to first-generation Ukrainians.
While their mother, Lubomyra "Luba" Farmiga, was a schoolteacher, their father, Mykhailo Farmiga, was a systems analyst turned landscaper. They were born after the second world war.
Vera's maternal grandparents were affected during World War II. After they were displaced and kept at a displaced person camp in Karlsfeld, Germany, they fell in love.
Vera was born on August 6, 1973, in New Jersey, as her parents had moved to the United States in search of a better life. The actress grew up in a Ukrainian community and did not learn to speak English until she was six because their parents wanted them to have a solid Ukrainian foundation.
Growing up, they moved around a lot before they settled on farmland in Wilmington. After high school in 1991, Vera already knew how to play the piano and was a professional Ukrainian folk dancer who toured with a folk-dancing group.
She wanted to study optometry but ended up studying acting and graduating from the Syracuse University School of Performing Arts in 1995. In 1996, she made her Broadway debut as an understudy.
A year after her Broadway debut, they cast her as the female lead in "Roar," a series that became her television debut. Vera made her feature film debut when she starred in "Return to Paradise" in 1998.
She has appeared in movies such as "Up in the Air," for which she received an Academy Award nomination. The actress has also starred in "Bates Motel," "The Departed," "Down to the Bone," "Goats," "The Conjuring," "Orphan," and more.
In 1997, during the production of "Roar," she met actor Sebastian Roché, and after the series ended, they eloped to the Bahamas that same year. By 2004, they had divorced and had no children.
On September 13, 2008, Vera married musician, songwriter, film producer, and occasional actor Renn Hawkey, and they live in Hudson Valley, New York, with their two children.
Their son Fynn McDonnell was born on January 13, 2009, and their daughter Gytta Lubov Hawkey was born on November 4, 2010. When Vera is not acting, she loves reading, playing piano, jujitsu, boxing, and spending time with her pet angora goats.
Taissa is the last of the Farmiga siblings and was born on August 17, 1994, in New Jersey. She was homeschooled, learned the American Sign Language, and has a higher English proficiency but is not as fluent in Ukrainian as her oldest sister.
She initially had no interest in being an actress and wanted to be an accountant. But Taissa was persuaded by Vera to take a role in Vera's directorial debut in "Higher Ground."
After her performance received critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival, she decided to pursue acting, and that same year, she landed a leading role in "American Horror Story." In 2016, she made her stage debut in "Buried Child."
Taissa has since starred in "The Bling Ring, "Anna," "The Final Girls," "6 Years," "In a Valley of Violence," "Rules Don't Apply," "Murder House," "Coven," "Apocalypse," and more. In 2018, when she starred in "The Nun," she joined her sister to become a part of "The Conjuring" universe.
On August 8, 2020, Taissa revealed that she married her best friend of six years, director and screenwriter Hadley Klein in an intimate ceremony at their Los Feliz, Californian home.
