Rhett Broderick Is the Youngest of Betty Broderick’s Four Kids: Where Are They Now?
Betty Broderick's murder case is still one of today's most spectacular crime tales, and it even inspired the TV show "Dirty John." Rhett Broderick has been enjoying a peaceful life since his mother's sentence. Here's an update on Rhett and his siblings' lives.
Rhett Broderick, one of four children of convicted murderer Betty Broderick, has recently opened up about his troubled upbringing, which was dominated by his parents' conflict.
Rhett's father, Daniel "Dan" Broderick III, died in 1989 due to a dispute between his mother, Betty, and his dad. According to his mother's memoir, released in 2015, she did not expect their argument to end so tragically.
Dan and Betty had been divorced before the crime happened. She also murdered Linda Kolkena, Dan's new wife. Betty was sentenced to 32 years in jail after being tried in 1991.
She appeared remorseful for what she had done to Dan and Linda in her memoir and wrote that she loved her children, who were her top priority. She went on to say that she wanted her kids to have a happy childhood.
RHETT BRODERICK'S CHILDHOOD
Rhett, born in 1979, is the youngest sibling of sisters Kim, Lee, and brother Daniel. Back in the day, Rhett's family was regarded as one of the most prominent clans in the ocean community of La Jolla, California.
Betty and Dan sent their children to private schools. Furthermore, the pair, also country club members, were known for driving sports cars and bringing their children on ski vacations in Colorado.
Within the Broderick family's opulent lifestyle, there was an unpleasant aspect to the couple's relationship. They used to argue, sometimes furiously. Betty also threatened to leave her husband on several occasions.
Betty's unhappiness led her to doubt Dan. In September 1984, the family transferred to a rental home after Dan discovered that their Coral Reef house had cracks in its foundation and needed deep repairs.
In February 1985, Dan moved out of their rental home and returned to their original house. The pair seemed to be in trouble again when Dan urged Betty to leave him alone, but his wife did not believe him.
Betty dropped Kim off at the house on Easter, where the teen waited for Dan to return. She also left Daniel, Rhett, and Lee at home on different occasions, but it looked like she suspected something was amiss with her husband. She told her kids:
"Your dad's not going to get away with this."
In September 1985, Rhett's father filed for divorce from Betty and later had full custody of their kids. His wife, however, never seemed to understand that their marriage would not last. After the couple split up, violent things happened.
RHETT BRODERICK'S INTERVIEW WITH OPRAH
After Betty was arrested and sent to prison, Rhett opened up in a previous interview with TV show host Oprah Winfrey about how he felt about her mother's behavior that led to her committing a crime. He said:
"Wow.' I wasn't really surprised. On multiple occasions [my brother and I] went to my dad and said to him that we wanted to live with my mom, and that not having her kids was driving her crazy—and that she could do something extremely irrational if she didn't have us."
The following years were turbulent for Rhett. He lived between his relatives' house and a boot camp for troubled youth. He also felt like he lived under a microscope.
BRODERICK'S CHILDREN WERE DIVIDED IF THEIR MOM SHOULD BE RELEASED OR STAY IN PRISON
Betty's guilt had been decided in a split decision by the court at her parole hearing in 2010. Rhett and his siblings, like the court, were divided between keeping their mother in jail and freeing her.
Rhett previously told Oprah that imprisoning his mother was not helping since she was "not a danger to society." His sister Lee later supported his opinion.
Lee said Betty should be able to live outside of prison. However, Daniel believed their mom should stay behind bars. Kim was also opposed to their mom's release.
WHERE ARE BETTY BRODERICK'S CHILDREN TODAY
The Broderick siblings have been living peacefully after a rough time with Betty, who harbored extreme anger and resentment over their father and their father's new wife.
Rhett and his siblings continued seeing their mother on occasions like Mother's Day.
Rhett, Kim, and Daniel are all married to their respective partners. Rhett and Kim, who live in Idaho, each have two children, while Daniel, who resides in California, is a father of three daughters.
In 2014, Kim published a memoir titled "Betty Broderick, My Mom: The Kim Broderick Story," which chronicles the family's story with their mom. Meanwhile, Lee's whereabouts are unknown.
According to Distractify, Lee was not on good terms with her father, allegedly due to drug abuse. Before his death, Dan excluded Lee from receiving any property or assets.
Betty is still being held in the California Institution for Women in Corona and will be eligible for release in January 2032. Rhett and his siblings continued seeing their mother on occasions like Mother's Day.
