The "Scrubs" star once shared that he used to make sure he made his son part of his day. When he used to memorize his lines for the medical series, he made it a mission to write "I love you" to his son in the text. He said:

"I decided underneath it all, so it's not too drippy, that in every episode, there had to be one spot where I, John (not Dr. Cox) got to say 'I love you' to Max."

He later met and married Nichole Kessler, a yoga teacher. They dated for nearly three years before the actor proposed in August 2006. The pair married on April 7, 2007, in an intimate ceremony at their home in Malibu.
