Susanne Somers became the nation's on-screen delight following her role as Chrissy Snow in ABC's sitcom, "Three's Company." However, she moved on to other exciting projects and later added a host of other titles to her resume.

The actress, who is also an author, singer, and health advocate, enjoys life as a happily married woman. At 76, she is still hooked to her husband of forty-five years, Alan Hamel.

The pair began their journey to this fairytale romance about fifty-six years ago, in the 60s, during a game show called "The Anniversary Game."

Hamel was the host, while Somers worked as the model standing next to the refrigerators on the show. Despite being ten years her senior, the duo formed a bond.

That was not the only limitation; they had both been married before. The "Three's Company" actress had newly divorced her first husband, Bruce Somers, with whom she shared a son, while Hamel was a father to two kids from his marriage to Marilyn.

Yet, it was not enough to get in their way. The movie star admitted that she was smitten as soon as she saw him, describing their first meeting as "love at first sight."

While speaking about the genesis of their relationship, the actress shared that she did not hesitate to plan a date with him because of fear that she may never get another shot at it.

Somers described their bond as an "incredible chemistry," which has lingered since day one. The "Three's Company" star confessed that Hamel was irresistible when they met.

So following their first date, a 20-year-old Somers neglected her mother's rules. Instead, she acted carefree—Hamel became the first man she ever slept with on a first date, yet, luckily, this did not affect their relationship, as they went on to create an admirable marriage. In her words:

"My first date with him, I did everything my mother told me not to do…I just knew he was the one."

Despite her conviction and love for each other, the couple waited for ten years before exchanging their vows.

The Couple's First Years Together Weren't Easy Though

During the time they dated for ten years, Hamel and Somers fought a lot and broke up often. However, no matter how complicated the issue was, they found a way to resolve it.

Somers defined her relationship with her husband as strange, but it has also been their way of making it work for many years. They believe in spending time together even though it may be considered unusual.

As a more mature woman, the actress understood that holding on to the early years of their romance was the key to their successful relationship. While dishing advice to younger couples, the 76-year-old confidently expressed:

"My advice and I'm not sure what it's worth, is to remember the early days of the relationship when everything was love and respect, sexy and very hopeful."

Despite how easy it may sound, it took years of hard work, commitment, and forgiveness to achieve a successful marriage and family with their kids.

Somers had been dedicated to raising only one son, and she had laid rules to be followed. However, her partner, who fathered two kids, a son, Stephen, and a daughter, Leslie, did not have any restrictions.

Expectedly, their parenting clashed, and instead of having a blended household for the first few years, it was a troubling home, which Somers labeled "stepfamily hell." In admission, she noted:

"I had a set of rules—no feet on the furniture, don't borrow our clothes without asking, knock before entering—and Alan didn't. We battled for years before we became united."

The author confessed that she would have suggested family counseling before rolling the ball if she could go back in time.

Thankfully, her patience paid off. She bonded with the kids and vice versa. As a result, Somers and Stephen enrolled in therapy to improve their relationship.

As for her stepdaughter, Leslie, accepting that her daddy had a new wife was challenging, so she rebelled by displaying eccentric behaviors.

However, it did not hinder Somers from constantly talking to her and eventually winning her over. Today, the women remain great friends.

The Hamel-Somers blended family all turned out to have outstanding careers and relationships with their family.

During a previous interview, the "Three's Company" added that she often praises her husband, who has maintained his youthfulness through constant exercise. At the time, she said:

"My husband's 84. He looks like [how] Steve McQueen used to look. He looks amazing. He works out. He's got big biceps. And I said, 'God, you're so gorgeous.' Well, that stays with him for the day. And we give each other a lot of attention."

The TV star explained that kids could be a hindrance to enjoying pure affection, especially when young, leading marriages to fail.

For her, this is the time to bask in each other's company and relish their love. Somers credit their continuous affection for the enduring marriage.

Without mincing words, the 76-year-old confirmed that they share passionate moments, including kissing, laughing, and verbally expressing their love to each other.

Somers defined her relationship with her husband as strange, but it has also been their way of making it work for many years.

They believe in spending time together even though it may be considered unusual. Being very aware of how some people might perceive them, she stated:

"We have a strange relationship. We absolutely love being together.. We've spent every minute and not one night apart in 40 years. I know it's unusual, but it sure works for us. We are one."

Indeed, oneness is everything needed to be a power couple, and as long as dreams and purposes are aligned, it is possible to have a thriving career and a happy marriage.

Somers and Alan also show that age is truly nothing but numbers that should not count in a love story.
